The best running cars I worked on have always been those with a matching setup. If you use a stock cam in a 400 I would definitely recommend not to move away to far from a stock intake and heads. For a street car, using the stock cam, I would stay very conservative. What might be a choice to consider is the old O4B Edelbrock intake, as far as I remember there are versions of it that would fit the shape of the 65 4Jet carburetor very well, you save some weight, and the intake is not as high as a performer. But since the cam has not a lot of lift, I do not see any benefit from head porting. A decent clean up for the heads and checkin out that you have all 8 chambers exactly the same volume, but that`s more like blue printing than porting.
I am sure your 400 will run at it`s best in stock form. One thing you really have to consider is the compression ratio. Because if you use the common felpro gasket, you will end up with a compression ratio of 9:1 (may be even less) even if you use 10:1 pistons because your gasket is so much thicker than the original obsolete metal gasket. So, using the thinnest gasket you can get hold of and go for your original compression ratio is the way to go. Cometic gaskets, or if you can get the old original ones. I run my cars with 10,5:1 and 95 pump gas, runs fine.
But if you loose compression, your performance is gone and is going to be even worse with ported heads and a different intake.

Assuming the rest of your oiling system works correctly, there is no problem using bronze valve guides.
I have been using them in B- and C-heads on 455 engines with best results on street and strip. So it will work on A-Heads as well. Always assuming the guy really nows what he is doing on an olds head. But if he has been in the racing business for a long time he will now.

Thank you all for your support, I am still on my way getting it done, and there is some work left... I am proud beeing part of the forum and the wild bunch of the 65 442`s we ride the Oldsmobile family since 1995, street and strip, but the 65 is just a special blast to me, can`t explain. below my other 442, a 71 w-30, has been a winner in class for some years. Stay tuned and a healthy and funky 2016 to all of you!!!!!!!! Sascha and Belinda (my wife rides the blue 64 Cutlass behind my 65 442, it is a time capsule, never restored, just plain stock, except the drivers seat cover)

the front of the car was a hell of a work, since the car one in his lifetime had been hit at the right front. The damage was not that bad, but badly fixed. We tried to straighten it out as good as possible. Attachments:

Does anybody have an idea what this code means??? The car is correct in all aspects like frame, distributor, head castings, carb number, all parts original, no repros… but the number on the head does not appear in any of the guide lines I could find? Thanks for your thoughts about it Sascha Attachments:

Taking a cue from wailinwayne, when was your car built. I changed the title because we need to know when production of the whole A body line started so we can know for sure if December was indeed late for the 442s. So everyone please post your build dates, production sequence number and what kind of car you have. My hardtop 442 was built 2nd week (3B) of March of 1965. My coupe 442 was built 3rd week (12C) of December 1964. My Holiday Coupe was built 2. week of January Sascha
