By rights I should have stated my source of info when I stated that it was December 1964 before the '65 Olds 442 hit the dealerships. The car mag Classic Sixties, Volume 2, No. 3, published in March 1984, reads as follows on page 23: Back in 1975, Oldsmobile Club of America member, Bob Hamby, wrote to Olds for more information on the '64s and '65s. The Olds Division Public Relations Administrator wrote to Bob to say, "The 442 option was introduced in December, 1964 on the 1965 model." Hope this helps a bit! Wayne. Its a good question Wayne that deserves to be investigated. Rumor always has been the 400 wasnt ready when the cars were. Now it may be that the cars werent built because the 400s werent ready. Or the side scoops werent in production yet. Or someone just forgot to say go ahead and start building them. Whatever it was we have enough guys here to get a good count to see if that was true. Thats why they put 425s in them, 400s werent ready right Jeffy?

My bad, typo - that plate with body number 33800 is mine. 2nd week August (08B), LAN38000 body #, holiday coupe I find it hard to believe we could have this big of a gap in production numbers in just one week. How you jump to 38000 baffles me. Are you absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt, 100% sure its not 33000?Jeff's vert production number 1841, show the numbers were low in DecemberAfter looking thru a shit load of dataplates.... 11B is as far back as I can find a 442! Look What WalinWayne Started.

For the sake of interest I want to share some info I came across lately that relates somewhat to these two questions; namely, when did the '65 442 actually go into production and were any 425's legitimately installed very early in the manufacturing process? I quote, " In January, 1965, Oldsmobile issued the manual including the 400 as the only 442 engine. This doesn't mean that the 400 wasn't available till then. It simply means that they took their time getting the manual up to date. We have seen 389298 B block 400's with a Julian date of 121 which indicates that it was built late April of 1964. So I feel that this blows the 425 theory out of the water. I have seen a few dealer replaced 425's after the original 400 was blown, but they did not come from the factory and there has never been a sale order or window sticker documented to prove differently." End of quote!
