Taking a cue from wailinwayne, when was your car built. I changed the title because we need to know when production of the whole A body line started so we can know for sure if December was indeed late for the 442s.
So everyone please post your build dates, production sequence number and what kind of car you have.
My hardtop 442 was built 2nd week (3B) of March of 1965.
My coupe 442 was built 3rd week (12C) of December 1964.

Apparently we have 4 guys here that own a 442. Come on, lets see if these cars really came out late in 1964.

By rights I should have stated my source of info when I stated that it was December 1964 before the '65 Olds 442 hit the dealerships. The car mag Classic Sixties, Volume 2, No. 3, published in March 1984, reads as follows on page 23: Back in 1975, Oldsmobile Club of America member, Bob Hamby, wrote to Olds for more information on the '64s and '65s. The Olds Division Public Relations Administrator wrote to Bob to say, "The 442 option was introduced in December, 1964 on the 1965 model." Hope this helps a bit! Wayne.

Its a good question Wayne that deserves to be investigated. Rumor always has been the 400 wasnt ready when the cars were. Now it may be that the cars werent built because the 400s werent ready. Or the side scoops werent in production yet. Or someone just forgot to say go ahead and start building them. Whatever it was we have enough guys here to get a good count to see if that was true.

The earliest on Bros page for a 442 is 4th week of November 1964. So that kinda debunks the theory that the 442 wasnt offered until December. It still means the car made it to the dealer in December though. The car could have been built on 27th, a Friday, and shipped to the dealer the next week. Which was December.
