looks like some black underneath. can you guarantee that it has never been repainted, which means that it has never been out of your site for the last 46 years. huuuuummmmm? Can only vouch for 40 or so years as a few of them in the early 70's were lost and I don't know what really happened Anyway, if the black pulley was on before paint then it stands to reason the bronze paint would be on top.

All 65 Cutlasses and 442s built and sold for use in CA used a closed PCV system. The system used a PCV valve in the driver side valve cover, a top hat style oil cap on the filler tube, and a unique breather on the passenger side valve cover. All other cars made at Fremont but sold outstate used the 49 state style breather and AC OIL open element breather on the oil tube. The hole in the other valve cover was sealed with a rubber grommet. Photo is of the 49 state breather, the California breather, and the rubber plug on a Washington state based 442. Lansing built cars have no hole in drivers side cover and no PCV valve. First pic is the Lansing and non CA unit, middle is California only, and last is the plug used on Fremont built but not CA sold cars. Grassy Ass Amigo!

I'm looking for a nice AC oil cap (open style) When you say "open style" are you talking Freemont or Lansing type? I've got a couple Lansing AC Oil caps but not the Freemont.

Since this engine didn't have the original valve covers, how do I determine the setup for the PCV valve and breather/combo? BR[], checked your site and maybe I missed it but the picture you have shows a right and left system, this car shows it only on the right firsttraderegistry.com/forsale/5_07/65olds/ from what I can see so does RAMZ car (only on the passenger side). The assembly manual shows two methods but to the best of my ability doesn't say when to use which? One utilizes the single hole whereby the back of the carb vacuum and the air cleaner attaches to the breather under the passenger side 2). The back side of the carb goes to the drivers side and the piece from the air cleaner to the passenger side. So which system would apply in my case?

I simply knocked them out with the mini sledge but as Bubba says, be careful. Air chisel would be better for sure. Before installing them, put in your freezer overnight, the metal will contract a bit making it a little easier to apply. I replaced all of mine that way.

First of all Happy New Year to all that utilize this site. It's a great outlet not just for tech issues but for those of us that have those grandiose ideas of getting our cars all finished and back on the road again before our joints are all locked up!!! For my next point. I am getting ready to celebrate my 30th anniversary on February 9th of 2011. If you are all exited for me, let's get excited for the right reasons! It will be 30 years since I/MOM purchased my 65 442 here in cleveland. I was only 18 and the title is still in my mothers name. Hard to believe. This car lived most of its life on the track apparently since the odometer only showed 24,014 miles. The original drums were never turned! Since I blew the engine in 1983 at Norwalk, I have been moving it around from place to place. It now sits here at my house to remind me of the days I did nothing but think about money, 442 and girls. Sometimes girls, girls and 442.. Sometimes money and 442!!! Anyway I will leave the rest of the details for the "MY BIO" section of this forum that maybe we can start for those interested in all the details some of us older guys have accumulated over the years!! Steve....... Steve, welcome and great idea about the bio..... perhaps RAMZ will start a section
