Is there any interest in forming a Restoration Parts Production Group (or any other name) to build unavailable parts? I'm thinking we could, as a group, set up a small entity to fund the production of 65 specific parts. It could work like this, say we establish the funds necessary to make apart. Then we sell shares to cover the R&D plus an initial run of product. Seems like we have much of the talent available to set up the manufacturing process (knowledge base). Actual work would be sub-contracted. We could set up the group to be non-profit where the parts sale covers the investment or... Maybe some of you who have part production experience can offer some advice. Some of the items I could suggest would be: 1. The tail panel 2. Pot metal chrome 3. Fender patch panels 4. Signage like the link below With a 100 of us the individual startup cost would be small an we could pick an item to be the first choice to produce (Poll the members) . We could run this as a member owned entity. We can figure out later an business requirements and structure, if there is enough interest. i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu154/Alan442_2009/IMG_2204.jpgAlan

Great idea! I kinda remember Br[] having some billet trim stuff on his site. Would think that if someone had access to a CNC, could probably duplicate the pot metal parts and fab out of aluminum. Would think it may be cheaper than refurbing pitted or damaged originals, if we could get enough interest to make it worthwhile. Any thoughts?

The aluminum stuff that Glen has on his site is at this moment in the trial stages(polishing and chroming of a fender chrome piece). I believe that will work out but we shall see. All in all I think it's an idea to kick around Alan, I guess we'll wait and see what some of the other guys have to say. We could make a listing of what is currently available for our cars by our member or people like Fusik for all our member to see. That would be a start anyways.

Hi All,
Bro, I see you have already invested in the trim work. Is that something you would consider having some silent partners in your effort? How many of the 10 side trim pieces do you have in development?
Seems like it takes more investment than any one of us is willing to work with to field these parts. With a number of people in the investment pot spreads the cost (pain) and improves the outcome (faster production) to get these parts made. And if we work together, there will not be multiple efforts working on the same pieces.
There are lot's of small trim pieces like knobs and other small stuff to work on.

Alan.... It's not me ........He just keeps me posted. That is the piece before the front wheel and the first piece out of 10 that is in the works. But progress is slow and no one should get impatient and start asking when they'll be done. We'll be the first to know. It will be interesting to see what the actual production costs will be. I do like your idea and personally I think the tail panel is the place to start, but it's going to be expensive.

I think a first step is to determine how many sources are known for the 3 dimensional scan of the source part. We can get quotes from the vendors on some type of metric ie; cost per square inch of scan input for production or other metrics.
Do we have any CNC machinist skills in the members? I use AutoCad in my work but two dimensional layouts. We need to understand that the scan database may need to operate on multiple CNC platforms. We may wish to commission a test run (actual CNC new part) of the scanned part for dimensional accuracy.
From there we can shop out the actual production based on a minimum run consistent with demand.
Breaking the production question into two parts, part scan and production, makes the development much more workable. And production can be scheduled on a small run of 5 to 10 pieces.
The parts could be distributed to our group polished or as produced by the CNC machine. With some markup to cover the R&D work, returned to the R&D fund.

Alan, I'll start the list, people can add to it. The only problem with making the pieces like some of us do is either we price our products too high(or they cost too much to produce at the volume we sell at) or there is no demand. As sales are not brisk 1. Side scoops>>Rod (not currently a member) 2. Front turn signal lenses and gaskets>>Rod 3. Rear tail light chrome bar>>Rod 4. Tail light gaskets>> Rod 5. Side chrome something fender>>Rod(soon) 6. Battery holdowns>>ME 7. Side scoop inserts>>Me 8. Performance log>>Ramz 9. Window Sticker>>Ramz 10. Stickers for springs and such>>Ramz 11.442 TEEEEeeee shirts>>BRO 12. 442 Banners >>>Bro 13.Radiator shroud>>Look on Bro's site 14. 442 emblems>>Mike Dulak, not a member, also sold by other companies 15. Tailpipes>> Walt, not a member 16. battery box's>>Fusik 17. Tailpipe hangers>>Fusik That's all that comes to mind, other can chirp in

Thanks Jeff,
Running some rough numbers for materials, the tail panel will cost $125-200 for Aluminum material. Allowing say 4 hours of machinistv time at say $300, and $100 for polish and we are approaching $600. This is not the best part to start with. Although, I think we could get the tail panel to $400-500 with a run of 10-15.
We should start with a small trim piece like the one Bro is working.
The Tail panel may be cheaper to produce as a casting, like the original.

Well since we have a cnc expert making the fender chrome maybe we should wait and see what his end product turns out like but if they look like his side scoops I don't think quality will be a quality issue, just a time issue. Another thing is we don't want to have two sources making trim parts, just not enough volume to support it. Rod has already put the time to build his 3D model by laser measuring or however he did it.

Cant wait to see how Rod's stuff turns out...I was fortunate enough to get a set of side scoops early on....He did an awesome job on them

I also bought a set of the side scoops from Rob, very nice work. I do not have contact data for Rob.
Does anyone have Rob's contact data?
