Why not keep it simple and use an adapter. They seem to be working without incident. You will want a forged crank out of a 65-6-7 400 or 425 if you are going to do the crank swap. There may be other years, but I'm not sure.

I think you're getting ripped off if they want $150 to drill out crank, I've had 3 done for $45 each within the last five years.

Say BR[], can you give a brief synopsis on the preparation, installation, pros and cons of using one of them adapter thingies. How do they work EXACTLY ? I`m guessing a lot of us here would benefit from any light you could shed. Especially some of us newbies

Not me...... I know some members here have used them, but I'm not one of them, so I honestly can't give any first hand knowledge. I hope some of them step up and answer your questions.
From Dick Miller:
Stick shift pilot bearing adapter. A new solution to an old problem. Convert a GM automatic transmission crankshaft to a manual shift crank without taking the crank out of the block. Knurled for a sure fit with self alignment for a perfect fit and smooth running and shifting. Requires modest shortening of input shaft with common tools or rough drilling the crankshaft. Also for engines that are using a midplate resulting in the transmission being moved rearward and not engaging the stock pilot bearing far enough. Fits Oldsmobile 260-455, Buick 350-455, Cadillac 400-500, Pontiac 326-455, and Chevrolet 305-502.
TECH TIP: To properly install either DMR-5022 coat the knurled edges with red Loctite before driving the bearing into the crank.

Adapter fits into the rear of the crank. You either drill out a dummy hole for input shaft clearance or cut off the tip of the input shaft. Either way will work. I opted to cut the input shaft. Thats it. My dad recently swapped out the engine in his 67 for a low mileage 400. He used the bearing because that 400 was from an auto. Seems to be working fine.
