Don't want to start a pissin' contest here but I still wonder about engine color. Bro's site says Fusick's engine paint is too red, Ramz's shows the nos head as really red, kind of a cinnamon-ie color and he says Fusick's is the closest. When I look at all the engines on the site they seem to be more bronze. I know this is an old issue but I just wondered if there were any new ideas. Yeah I know, but I've been screwed up for years!

This attachment is the same engine after it was stripped and hit with a single coat of Rustoleum High-Heat Aged Copper. Note the water pump still has the Bill Hirsch on it, and you can see the difference. Once I put a second coat on it, the color changed slightly to a deeper bronze. Also, the lighting is terrible in the shop.
I like the Rustoleum Aged Copper, and it's available and cheap. I will add though that I did do four small paint test cards on metal (primer one coat, no primer one coat, primer two coats, no primer two coats). They all looked different after they dried. I think the primer brought out more of a milkyness and I ended up painted my engine two coats, no primer.

I never thought they were real red either. But what about the NOS head in Ramz's pictures? I'm about ready to paint the thing corporate black and be done with it. This is nuts! Thank You to every one who's trying to help. The input is great!!!!!!

I believe that the color varied from batch to batch. I mean come on, these were just engines they were painting not fenders. That said, I am a fan of the Rustoleum aged copper. It is cheap and available at Home Depot. No matter what color you paint it someone else is going to say it's wrong.

Thanks Shane, I'll look forward to the pictures, more fuel for the fire. We could beat this topic to death, or we already have. I think Chadman's about right though, no matter what color it is somebody will say it's wrong.

I took the Rustleum Aged Copper and compared to the little bracket thingys that were original in color and the match was fair to midlan. Or spot on to what I was working with.

Thanks Shane, I notice in the first picture, by your thumb, that the paint looks less faded and appears more red and there seems to be some streaking there on the end where it looks lighter. And Bro, that's what I wondered too, if Ramz's head happen to be from a 425. Just wanted some one to say it, that would know and that wouldn't be me. Thanks everybody! Lets put it to rest before some one comes gunnin' for me.

I'd have to find the picture again Glenn, but I think the 425 red was really red>>I don't think it was a 425 red.

Not red, bronze. Remember, the paint wasnt exactl each time, probably came in a 55 gallon drum, and was metallic. Lansing cars front ends didnt match, because the bodies were painted at Fisher and the front ends were done at Lansing assembly. So imagine how off each barrel of engine paint was. The first engine off the line probably didnt match the last. Hot Rod Harry said his dads 65, bought in 66, had an engine this color. I also have an oil filter housing with bronze thats closer to it than Shanes valve covers. Again, whats correct? Probably all of them.

I'd have to find the picture again Glenn, but I think the 425 red was really red>>I don't think it was a 425 red. I agree Jeffy, I hadn't seen Z's pic in a long while and thought it was a true red. So after going thru 50 different colors, I 've come to the conclusion that if it's in the ball park and you like it, there's no one that can prove you wrong. If there is no one that knows the exact match, based on the collective intelligence gathered on this site, then there is no way anyone out there can dispute it. That sounded repetive?

I heard Fusick used an NOS 67 valve cover to make their paint. I like the redder bronze myself. I dont like the browner paints. Id say Fusicks is the closest to whatever paint was used. I reckon that with all the 65-67 owners out there and with the internet age, Olds didnt have an exact color for every car, every year, every engine. Because we would have figured this out by now.
