I am trying to paint my backing plate on the front brakes but, I am having trouble removing the spindle. There is a retainer for the drum brake springs that goes through the backing plate to the spindle. Does any one know how to remove this? Is it pressed on or threaded on? Thanks.

Its not pressed on, I had mine apart. I just cant remember how I did it. It has something to do with that spring retainer. I think there is a big bolt under that round retainer. Gently tap on it and see if it moves at all. Mine apart to prove I did it.... ;D

It's been awhile since I took mine off as well, I switched my 442 to discs from a 68 A-body.
Looking at the backing plate and the spring retainer/shoe mount I'm fairly certain that the larger diameter ring just slides on the spring/shoe mount. After it is on any car for just a few months the larger ring gets sealed to the spring/shoe mount.
The backing plate's main securing points are the bolts just below and on either side of the spindle

It may slide over it but there is a big bolt thats there. See the attached photo of the bare spindle. That bolt took a ton of torque when I put it back in, that much I do remember.

I don't remember all that well really as it's been awhile. Is it a hex head, as in the whole stud/bolt is turned out/in? If it is then it;s just a big funnt shaped bolt.

Well we got it off this weekend. We wacked with the mallet and it still would not come off. We disassembled the LH brake drum and that spring retainer fell out easily. So we sprayed some liquid wrench on the spring retainer and my dad screwed the bolt on a couple of threads on to the spindle and after about ten solid hits it came off. It acted like it was pressed on. It must have been from some rust and age. What paint did you use to paint your spindles RAM Z?
