So I just ordered a set of rear springs from Eaton Detroit. Spoke to a very nice guy and told him of my build… Club Coupe body on a convertible frame.
Just got the springs and they are TALL! 16+“ Is this normal? I assume they’ll compress with some weight on them…but they are SO tall! Can anyone confirm height?
At this point, my shocks are at full extension and my control arms are close to being at max extension. My old Moroso rear springs were a tick under 14”
Any insight? -peter

Same as mine. I put a jack under the control arm with no motor in the car and the control arm didn't move. Had to use a spring compressor to bolt up the front shocks. I ordered Heavy Duty, stock height from Eaton. They are stiff and tall! But My originals were squishy like marshmallows and the car sat too low. PS: my original new 442 in 1965 sat higher and was way stiffer than the current one, before I bought the springs.

Did you use Eatons in the rear?

Yes, all four and new KYB Shocks from Eaton. Supposed to be OEM Heavy Duty spec, standard height. Are yours standard or heavy duty?

I just looked up what they sent me. MC1841...which is a Heavy Duty Spring for an F-85 club coupe.
What I asked for was a 442 spring...and possibly one for a convertible seeing as I'm using a convertible frame. I guess I should call them.

Pete, you have no weight on that frame. So the springs arent going to compress. Imagine a body, engine, full interior and liquids. It will settle.
And if you could jack up the front control arm with a spring installed and no engine, the car would drop on the tires once you put a motor in.

Yeah...I know you're right about it compressing. I'm just worried that the springs I got are too tall/heavy.
Eatons website lists the springs for a club coupe Heavy duty 442 at 16lbs. And the springs they sent me are Heavy duty F85 club coupe which are 19lbs. They didn't give any spring height info interestingly.
I could barely get the springs in they were so tall.

The 442 had the "F41" Heavy Duty Suspension package as part of the 442 option. I believe the f-85 springs were considerably softer. If you are running a big block you probably need the heavy duty spring. The 330 was considerably lighter. Did you know that you have the option with Eaton to order a custom length, either over or under stock length. up to two inches. When I was 18, and my 65 was brand new, the trend started by Baldwin Motion Chevrolet was to raise the "A" body muscle cars two inches to aid weight transfer on the drag strip. I didn't do that because I Autocrossed the car, but it was stiff from the factory. I will have my car back on its wheels in a couple of weeks. If you want me to measure frame and fender heights I'll be happy to do that for you. Just let me know. Chris.

Yeah...I think I got the wrong set. I told him I was running a 400(from a 67 442). And still he gave me the F85 (330) springs. They haven't called me back yet.
