I'm confused. My car is a plain Jane Holiday coupe. Jetaway on the column, P/S. P/B, that's all. I dropped the rear today, and the housing is stamped "TG". According to Bro's Tech info, that is a 3:90 rear. The car has an open rear. I was under the impression that A/T cars came with either a 3:08, or 3:23 only. I'm the second owner, and I'm sure the rear is original. Would a 3:90 open rear have even been an option for special order? Unfortunately, i haven't found the build sheet. I haven't pulled the cover yet to count teeth.

There is no such thing as a 1965 "plain jane Holiday Coupe". All 1965 F85 Holiday Coupes were Cutlass models, with the higher level trim and standard equipment. The side trim on the car in your sig line photo belies the fact that it's a Cutlass, as will the cowl tag and VIN. Yes, "TG" is a 3.90 open rear axle, which was certainly an available option on that car under RPO G94, as shown in section 4 of the 1965 PIM.

Joe, thanks for the comment. I don't think precisely like an engineer. What I meant was that for a Cutlass Holiday Coupe, the car has almost no options. No P/W. Power locks, power seats, remote mirror, retractable seat belts, tinted glass, A/C and so forth. I was surprised to see the "TG" marking. I assumed if one would special order 3:90 gears they would most certainly order a posi rear. If it was a four speed post coupe, I would assume the buyer intended to dealer install 4:10's or more. If I can't find a build sheet, is there any other way to find that information in some archives somewhere?
Stan, I ordered a rebuilt M-20 for the car with the 2:56 first gear thinking it would have at most a 3:23. Mileage will suck, but I should be able to pull a stuck John Deer out of the mud.
Thanks guys.

I'm not sure what my car came with from the factory or if the previous owner changed the rear but when I got it it had a 3:08 open rear.

Thanks guys. In the 1960s, PW, P Locks, and A/C were not common, despite the fact that you can't buy a car without them today. Heck, power steering and brakes were not that common. Also in the 1960s, it was a LOT more common to order a car to your specs (which was just "ordering", not "special ordering"). My parents never bought a car off the lot, they always ordered what they wanted. And people order all kinds of weird combos. I owned a 1984 Custom Cruiser wagon with the only options of A/C and a posi. It had crank windows, manual locks, manual seat, etc. Go figure. It was great in the snow, however.

Thanks guys. Pop that cover off yet, I don't smell any whiffs of rear end dope in the air, that stuff is the best, you can clean it up spotless, use brake clean, the whole nine yards and the only thing you smell the next day in the garage is the stiff smell of rear end dope, lovely way to start the morning.

The smell of that stuff is the worst thing ever invented for an automobile. Back in the day I always managed to get it in my hair! The only way to get rid of the smell is, just time. Only one other thing in life that has to wear off and we best not go into that on this website......

Hi,
Personally I think atf is worse, a good way to kill gear lube smells is toothpaste, not sure exactly why maybe some mouthwash in the paste, but it does cover up the smell
My 65 Cutlass, 330 4v 2 speed came with 3.08's open, can't imagine how 3.90's would be, although soon to be changing mine to 3.90 for a 455/200r4 combo, hopefully this Sumner.
Regards, Jim

My 3:90's are quick out of the hole, go through the gears fast, and get best mileage at about 50 mph without OD, but the 200-4R will correct the highway mileage. OD of .67 in your trans should be like 3:08 rear in top gear. Good luck with swap. Chris
