Thanks Nick I actually have that printed out at my desk. But it states (SEE BELOW) that they are the same width up until 68. But the guy selling the 66 says it is wider I'm just trying to confirm. I'm only planning on using the gear set but would like to have the axles as spares if they are the same.
From the 442 article: Swapping
Interchange Guide Year From Year To Model(s) Comments 64-66 64-66 GM A-body - Cutlass, Chevelle, LeMans, Skylark Bolt in. 67 64-66 GM A-body Lower spring perch is different, requiring the use of the 67 springs. 68-72 64-66 GM A-body Axles are about an inch wider than the earlier ones and also have the control arm mounting locations in a slightly different place; the axle will physically bolt up to the early car but the pinion angle will be wrong.

1964-67, GM A-body rearend housing dimensions measure 56.5 inches, from flange to flange. Total measurements with the drums in place is 60.5 inches. The dimensions are similar to the 1967-69 Camaro / Firebird, and 1968-74 X-cars and clones, except leaf springs were used. 1968-72 rearend housings measure 58.5 inches from flange to flange, and with the brake drums in place, the total dimensions measure 62.5 inches. The dimensions are similar to the 1970-81 Camaro / Firebird, and 1975-79 X-cars and clones, except leaf springs were used.

I've used axles out of a '70 442 in my Cutlass post coupe for about 30 years now and the axle in my 442 is from a '70 Chevelle. You can get them to bolt up under a 65 with some work, and not a ton of work either. As a matter of fact on a 442 frame with the different upper control arm locations, it's a bit easier. The clearance on the rear quarters is tight, but it does not rub at all.
I had to wrestle the '70 axle in my Cutlass, but it worked great and is so nice having a posi instead of the peg-leg that it came with. You can also rebuild your axle with different gears and posi units from the aftermarket. Either way, to get an axle to withstand the high speed driving you want to do with that LS1 in there, you are going to have to pay anyway.

I give I'm still getting yes it is no it's not answers. When all else fails get the tape measure out. I have already dropped the 66 rear end off at the drive line shop. I called them and told them to measure it. If it is the same as my 65 and BRO if anyone should know you would I'll have a spare rear end housing and axles for my 65. I had them strip the ring and pinion out to fix mine. Turns out the pinion was cracked from my high speed driveline accident.

Thanks Jim but I got the ring and pinion gear set from a 66 olds rear end I bought in dallas a few weeks ago. All is well now my cutlass is on the road again and running smooth. I'll be in touch I still need to get my glass removed to start the restore job. That is unless some one buys it first. dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/cto/1410754589.htmlI'm not to worried I priced it well above what anyone would give for it but I got over 12k in parts alone last year in it and it runs and drives like a new car. The price reflects that. Kinda got my heart set on another direction we shall see. Thanks Rocky
