I am looking for the opinions from the group. I recently purchased a 65 442 stock convertible with several options, Air, PW, PS, PB, P Seat, Tilt and has a column shift. The only non stock modification to the car is the transmission. The 2 speed Jetaway was replaced with a 3 speed TH400 several years ago. The car runs strong and shifts well and I have no complaints.
I also just purchased another 65 cutlass hardtop, all original with 66,000 miles. It has the 2 speed Jetaway, floor shift and several options that I was looking for including power antenna, custom simulated wood wheel, remote mirror, PW, P Seat, and power trunk release. The car is all there and can be restored.
My plan is take the options I want for the Vert and then sell the hardtop to recoup my investment. The question is should I take the TH400 out of the Vert and replace with the original Jetaway 2 speed now that I have the hardtop. My goal for the Vert is a completely stock machine. Your thoughts.
Thanks, Boba

If your goal is completely stock, then yes swap in the 2 speed. But the only person who knows whats really in there now is you. Ive always went by the logic of not messing with something that works.
Id take out the jetaway and save it just to have. Nothing wrong with having the stock parts on hand just in case you want to go that route.

You probably won't notice much of a performance difference between the two. In the 65 I sold to Bud442 I swapped the Jetaway for a built 350 turbo and didn't notice much difference (hardly any) in performance. The biggest was the firm shift but acceleration was about the same off the line. I'm with Jasen on this one, keep the stock trans on the shelf.
BTW: If you are looking at parting out the car you bought for the options, would you by chance have a set of rust free hardtop doors?

I would lean more towards the Jetaway(although I've heard that the TH400 is supposed to be more fun to drive). I also don't think it makes much difference since they are both automatics. If your going stock, I say put in the Jetaway. Just my 2 cents worth. On the other hand, I do agree with RAM Z. Remember the old saying "if it aint broke, don't fix it"? Either way it sounds like a good project. Good luck!

The car is all there and can be restored. Unless you really want a 100% stock car, stay with the TH-400. But since you are swapping parts on the car that it didn't come with, then it really doesn't matter because it's not stock anyway. Out of curiosity, was the hardtop you bought an Ocean Mist out of PA from eBay? If you did, I was following that auction and wanted that car myself. Just went up a little too high for me at the time. If it was this time last year it may have ended up in my yard! That car has a bunch of really great and rare options, including the steering wheel that I've always wanted for my 442. Big Mike thanks for the suggestion. Right now I am leaning toward keeping the TH400 in the car and putting the Jetaway ( I have an extra one) and associated parts on the shelf. I do need to modify the cross-member a bit. Who ever did the conversion did not adequately attach the cross-member to the frame which was moved back about 6 inches.
Yes I bought the PA car. I drove it 125 miles home and it ran really well. It's all there, the body is a little rougher than the pictures but its a driver and restorable. It has all the options except Tilt and Air. It has the wheel, trunk release, remote mirror, power antenna, Power windows, power seat, Posi, and the floor shifter which I was looking for. I don't need the Jetaway from this car, I have another one so I may just take the options and sell it. Not sure yet. I have 2 65's I am looking to restore. Sorry we bid against each other.

If you are planning on driving it on the road a lot u may want 2 concider keeping the 400... You will be a lot happier with it downshifting to pass a car... You could always put a 4 speed in it! Haha

Thanks for the advice. The TH400 feels strong and shifts well. I have 2 Jetaway setups so for now I will leave them on the shelf and invest some money in other areas of the car. I have another 4 speed hardtop that I have had for many years. After I finish the convertible I plan to restore the hardtop. Then I'll get to shift around town. For now the convertible will stay an automatic.
