Started stripping my 65 down today and have a few questions. 1. How do you separate and then(more importantly) reconnect the bezels from the grill? (I assume the factory used these "tabs" to lock the grill into the bezel...but how do you reattach?) 2. What are the bezels made of? Do you send them out to be rechromed? Polished? Are the anodized like the window trim? Any picts, tips things to think of would be helpful. Thanks! -peter

(Sorry...I'm having problems copying the picture link from my Imgur account. Any tips here too?)

After you load the image into IMGUR click on it. click on images and then your photo. It brings up several choices. Pick the one titled BB Code. It should look something like this. Now hit the copy button and then paste the code to your message on the 442 Board. I just used mine to show it works.

I'm not sure what the original finish of the bezels were, but I had mine polished and they look amazing. Before polishing they were in rough shape (but dent free), and I had my doubts when the shop said I would be happy with just polishing them. I had tried to polish them myself to no avail (slight improvement). When I picked them up from the shop I was amazed at the transformation, they looked better than new. About 5 years later and they still look new.

Jason has done a fantastic job documenting every aspect of restoring two cars. If you look through his picture and resources used, you will see they are anodized. Polishing will certainly get them cleaned up and looking nice, but anodize coating will most likely be removed making them appear brighter and also more susceptible to aging, they are staked together at those tabes whIch can be redone with a hammer and screw driver. Or other appropriate means to bend them to tighten up

“Staked”...thats not a term I’ve heard before. It almost looks like electricity was used somehow. Or heat I guess. The pot metal grill definitely looks like the metal bubbled somehow. -peter

I used a local chrome shop. I inquired about anodizing, but they felt I would like the look of polishing better. They showed me examples of anodized ones and I did not care for them, but not sure if there are different types of anodizing. They looked dull. As for aging, the car sits in the garage 90% of the time so no issue there. On my car at least, the bezels simply snap-fit into the grills via those slots, then screws into the radiator support. Five minute install.

It dose not fix pitting, so the better the bezels, the better the finished product.

McNicholls did both my cars. The bezels were not chromed. The original look was a matte finish. They strip, polish then bright dip them. They look brand new and it didn’t cost that much.
