So the assembly manual shows a dab of paint on the clutch, and a dab of paint on the water pump hub, and the two dabs should be no more than 90 degrees apart when installing. My NOS clutch has the dab of paint, but of course the water pump does not.
What is it that they are lining up here? Is this important?

I don't know about nos, but a clutch fan in general is good for an average of 15-20 horsepower.
There is a pretty good episode of engine masters where they dyno different fan setups and a fan clutch is the most dramatic hp difference.
Obviously an electric fan would be better.

If you're not racing (and yes the electric would be the way to go for that) I'de worry more about cooling issues.

Theoretically cooling should be a non-issue as when the car is running hot the fan should be engaged.
Unfortunately, our cars run on oil, gas, blood, sweat and tears and not so much on theories.
