Does anyone know what type of screw the console plate is held to the console with? Does anyone sell these screws or can they be picked up at the local hardware store? I can't seem to get any of the threads started on mine and was not sure of the thread type. (ie. course / fine thread, machine screw / trim screw, etc.)

I guess nobody knows the answer to this one...... I've got a plate sitting on my work bench, I'll drop you a post in the AM with the size.

OK, got to the top plate and took a good look. I take it that you do not have the original screws? The top plate I have does not have any, and I have never taken a 4-speed console apart before. Looking at the threads in the top plate and using several different taps and gages, the threads appear to be cut using flat bottom self threading screws.
The hole is the correct size to tap them out using an 8-32 tap. However, the tap nor the gage I have will thread into the existing threads. I tried a few #8 screws I had in a couple of the holes and they wanted to start threading, but not being the same screw that came out I did not try to screw it all the way down.
I have seen a self threading screws used in other factory applications, especially on pot metal and plastic interior pieces on the various vehicles in my time working on vehicles, so it wouldn't surprise me that the GM engineers did as well on our 65's.
Sorry I couldn’t give you a definitive answer, but my suggestion would be to find some #8 self tapping screws, or just some #8’s that have decent size threads and grind off the bottom to the correct length to use to put the console back together. Whatever you use make sure to measure before you screw it together and the screw is a flat bottom so you don’t run the risk of deforming the top plate or poking a hole through.

Not to say my console hasn't been messed with but my screws were self tapping. Just an FYI

Thanks Guys....this is good info. You are exactly right, I don't have the original screws and did not want to run the risk of ruining my top plate. Can someone take a photo of what the ''self threading screws' look like so I have an idea of the kind of screw I'm looking for. Does anyone know if these screws are sold anywhere?
