Has anyone replaced a dipstick tube while in the car? I'm must admit that I've never had to do this procedure to one of my Cutlass' before, but I do have to in my 442. Someone decided that this really nifty looking chrome tube and dipstick was the way to go and it is totally worthless, now I must replace it.
Can one remove the tube without loosening the exhaust manifold?
Any help and direction would be great, anything to save some time.

I remember the one in my junk 400 was two piece. I tried pulling it out and it came loose, but the bottom third stayed in the block. Either two piece or it broke off at the block.

It's a press fit, can either come out or not. Since your is aftermarket maybe it will come out easy. The exhaust dude Walt makes repo's of the original, or at least had them. Give it a yank straight as you can and hope for the best.

No, it's supposed to be one piece, I have an NOS tube to go in and it's one piece. Most likely the one you pulled out just broke like most do. I've only replaced tubes on engine sitting on an engine stand. Tubes rarely go bad or need replacing anyway. I'm hoping mine is like what Bubba said, it's a crappy aftermarket and hopefully will come out easily. Thanks for the input, I'll get around to it soon and let you know how it goes.

IF YOU CAN GET A DENT PULLER ATTACHED AT THE TOP SOMEHOW, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET JUST ENOUGH PULL TO YANK IT OUT. I ONCE GOT ONE PUSHED UP WITH AN AIR CHISEL ON LOW WITH A VERY SHARP FLAT BIT IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT THE OLD TUBE! GOOD LUCK!

I must have missed this one........... I find it helps to put a bolt that fits snugly in the top and then clamp vise grips on it. This give you somthing that you can bear down on. If you get a nice fit and then use the slide hammer or even a hawk bill pry bar, it should come out. Most of the chrome tubes don't fit as tight as the originals.
You don't have to remove the manifold to get it out. I did have to remove my starter to get mine lined up to go back in, but I have headers and a slightly different angle.
