how is that proof? some guy on ebay saying he has one? the 400 and 425 both used the same A heads, and the number that would correspond with a protecto plate to make it numbers matching would be on the right side head. how do you know if its a 400 or 425? no proof. there is another guy (retired gm emplotee?) that has a black one who swears up and down its a factory 425 car, and that may be so, but still, no proof. it is a possibility that they didn't have enough 400's done at the time and a few may have got a 425. it is also possible that the original 400 got blown up and was covered under warranty with a 425, but that is either here nor there.

If we went by what the sellers say, 65 442 couldve had 400s, 425s, 330s, 455s and 442 cubic inch engines from the factory.

So, I guess you are saying people on Ebay may lie about their items?
Did you see the shifter and the gray trunk?

People selling parts lie all the time.

The question of whether the 425 came in early 442's is a mute point. I believe they did, if you go by the dealer propaganda and what was actually sold, we all know that they put whatever they had when they built these cars in them. If they needed a motor and all there was was 425's, guess what, you had a 425 in yours. There are examples of these around and many people who have been around olds cars will tell you they did. Now the part about people lying about something to sell it, damn straight they do, but you just have to be cautious about some purchases.

I think it's interesting that the engine on the ebay car is painted red, rather than gold. Non-Toronado 425s were painted red. If the factory needed a motor to toss into a car, I wonder which stage they would have grabbed it at; pre or post paint. If the engine was not yet painted, I'd assume they'd paint it gold and just pass it off as a 400. Random thought. this one could have been painted red, pulled from a Ninety-Eight, or put in red if it really was a factory 425.
Lying and/or not knowing what they have... had a guy tell me the other day that his '67 matching numbers Corvette had the original 454... hmmm. must be a rare one.

From what I've heard they came Red, the color they were supposed to be for a 425.

The seller must have revised the ebay listing, has it states "Freshly rebuilt original 400/330hp engine". I think he may be mistaken about the horse power too, as a stock 400 motor should be roughly 345hp...

My pops met a local guy who has a '65 425 from his uncle's Olds tucked away in the corner of his garage. Guy said as long as it goes into a '65 Olds he'd sell it to me. Definitely going to follow up on that.
Who knows, maybe mine will be a numbers matching, factory 425ci 442 soon.
(I'm kidding... it'll never be numbers matching again, but a correct built 425 is better than a 330 that burns oil and chatters)
