Its time to make a carb decision, I am leaning towards a Holley Ultra Street Avenger 770 or Quick Fuel SS 780 looking at V.S. for either, any advice? I hope you're able to find some good info between these two to help your decision along. I don't have enough experience with either of these to give an educated opinion, but IMO you're on track with a VS carb on the street with an auto and overdrive.

No experience with either of those carbs. I've got a Proform 750 on mine now... seems to be ok... I am in the tuning portion of my build and I don't have that nailed down yet. Read both good and bad on the Proforms. I noticed no mention of the Demon's. Do they just not have the style you're looking for?

I have too many friends that had demons that they bought a few years back and they have all been trouble, the new ones since Holley took it over might be good. Proform is a line of Quick Fuel.

Well today I found a tiny leak between the intake and block, and there is a leak at the base of the carb, Its still pulling enough vacuum to have great brakes but I'm sure that is what is stopping the secondaries from opening. The timing is still a little off. Also I discovered that at the alternator in getting 14.33 volts but at the battery its getting 13.10, when I hit the switch its pulling down to 6 volts which ceems to be alot, im having trouble keeping the battery charged, the wiring harness I used had a alternator wire meant for a 60 amp alt, I am running a 100 amp, it says to replace that wire with an 8 guage if you have more than 60 amp, could that be causing the problem? As far as carbs I was told by Mark (Cutlassefi) to run a quick fuel SS 830. I also spoke with Patrick James of Pro Fuel Systems, ironically he also recommended their 830 carb. I will probably go with one of those two.

I fixed the intake leak, installed a 160 thermostat, Ironically after the thermostat change the car DID run cooler, I know, I know I have heard it a million times that a cooler therm will not make an engine run cooler. Before the thermostat change, it would heat to 200-210 in ten minutes or less of idle time, I could drive it and it would cool to 180, first red light I hit if i was sitting for more than a minute its at 210 and if i sat for longer than about 4-5 minutes its climbing above 215. Today with the 160 therm, after 10 minutes of idle time its at 185, I drove it for some time and it stayed at about 180, After driving it and bringing it home I let it sit and idle for an additional 10-15 minutes and it never got above 200 before I cut it off. Well I had already ordered the fan shroud and cut the holes for the fans so I went ahead and installed it, Did the same round of testing and at a stand still for long periods of time it will still hit 195-200, but the second I hit the road it cools and cools QUICK, less than a mile its at 175-180 and holding, hit a red light and it takes some time to warm up to 195ish, I couldnt get it to go above 200. Now It still runs like $#!t, the lokar throttle cable keeps stretching, (its a cut to length cable so yes its stretching) Pedal to the floor today and I am getting half throttle, I readjusted again and it ran better but not like it should, I really think its carb, seem to run out of fuel, I went ahead and ordered a carb from Patrick James of Prosystems. Hopefully I will se it in a few days, I'm going to change the 90 degree brass fittings that Paul had in the pump as well to AN style fittings, I am told those fittings are terribly restrictive.

A couple more days on tinkering in the garage and HUGE results. I had timed the engine to where it was at 36 degree total advance, I have noticed mine is still advancing until about 3500 rpm. When I took it to a supposed Olds guru to take a look at he retimed it. I put a light on it and it was at 24 base and 52-54 all in WTF? ? I timed it again yesterday bring the total advance to 36-38 so at 1000 its at 14-16, looked at the throttle cable again and still not getting full throttle, I finally took the entire assembly apart and found a frayed wire that evidently was hanging up and not letting the throttle go to WOT. Cut it adjusted it and reinstalled. Went for a test drive, 2 things I noticed after the test drive: 1) the temp is back up to 200-210 but it stays there, it doesnt get any hotter during idle or sitting still 2) Holy $#!t, nail it from a 10-15 mph roll the tires go up in smoke, shifts to 2nd, tires continue to boil, hit third and it pulls like s sled pulling machine. I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I pulled the plugs after returning home and they were solid WHITE, so I was right about the carb being to small, I am anxious to get the new carb from Prosystems and see what happens. Hopefully I will see it tue or wed.

Sounds like you're heading down the right track. Thanks Bill, ironically I jumped in it this morning and it didnt run as well, if i lay into the throttle now the quadrajet cuts out for about 2 seconds then takes off. Absolutly nothing has changed since yesterday, Hopefully the new carb will cure it.

I have to give a HUGE hats off, thumbs up, job well done, etc etc etc to Patrick James of Prosystems. I am absolutly amazed and how much better the car runs, It was a direct bolt on, I didnt even have to adjust the idle. The throttle response is crazy, the car is now dangerous in first, a scary tire frying experiance in second and please dont have an open drink in the car in third, WOW friggen WOW. In all honesty it feels like it picked up 50-70 hp. DRASTIC improvement!!!

Yes It is! and thanks! I wish you could take a ride in it. I dont know if the build sheet I posted answered your questions, but basically he takes a brand new Holley 4150 body only and builds the base plate and goes from there. He builds them for your car. And its about 100-200 dollars more than a shelf holley or quick fuel, he provides 24 hour tech support

Today was the local labor day fest/car show, I took my non hooded, junk 442 down and parked to see the show, the locals kept on and on till I pulled it in the show. I live in a small town that is flooded with muscle cars, and the local police are pretty slack about us "old timers". I caught some compliments and some hard time. I also had a few "i'd like to see what it runs like compared to a yadayadayada" basically I'm gonna out run you stuff in a polite way. What I can tell you now is it will easily walk away from a quick fuel carbed 502 with a 4 speed and a 4:10 gear, a fox body with a 347 and a 8 lb superchager, and a chevy 2 with a 355 and two 4 barrels. The Olds hurt some feelings today!

The wife and I have been talking about moving to the mountains for a while. A little town overflowing with muscle cars sounds like the place to be.

I am trying a VHT product on the intake and valve covers. I want something oil and gas resistant. It sprays very well, although the clear gives the covers and intake a "milky" tint which I am ok with if it truly is chemical resistant, I smoothed the valve covers which cant be seen in this cell phone pic, I will take some more with the camera which will show better detail, It would be pretty easy to polish these covers but I am not a fan of polished covers as they tend to stain and dull out pretty easy.

Has anyone used the Robbmc billet swivel thermostat housing? I think 100.00 seems a bit steep for one.
