What color should the Gas Tank be? Is it silver, or was it painted balck? I put in a new tank and was wondering if it needs to be painted.

RIP, Somewhere on this forum, there is some information and a few pics of someone who's done a gas tank. As to your question, the Gas Tank should be Silver and the Straps, Black. Here's a link that is detailing the restoration of a 1965 442 that shows their gas tank. wojt.com/crowley.htmlA few of the experts here on the forum, I'm quite sure can provide the specifics for the proper restoration. Ted

They wern't painted at all, but most had the dealer undercoat sprayed all over them. Some do them silver others paint them black.......it's all a matter of preference.

The undercoat you mention was dealer applied, not factory. The factory never undercoated anything, it was either added at the dealer or by the owner. I have a tank from a Michigan car and its undercoated, my Cali tank was bare steel.
