To find the correct engine paint for our cars we need to look no further than our local automotive paint jobber. I got them to look it up years ago when I painted mine, it is the paint number listed by GM Oldsmobile for our engines. I have not looked lately but it should still be available. I have no idea why the label says "1963" but this is the correct color. It is pretty old tech to use Alkyd Enamel, but it is catalyzed and holds up excellent. RocketguyDo you have any documentation that shows the GM engine color paint number? If so I'd love to get a copy. Also: I'd like to hi-jack your engine paint info for my web site. If you send me your name I'd appreciate it.

In 1969, when I bought my first '65 442 the engine was still original and I bouhgt it at a dealership in Sebring Florida. The engine was copper color, not bronze.....I remember it like it was yesterday. This because I had one and a friend of mine had one also. Neither one had the bronze look, just the color of copper that shows here in these picture of this tri-carb manifold.
Max Tugg I bet the paint shops used what was available and close to spec, after all, "its just and engine" and with no quality control programs back then, who was to care. Just deliver the parts to the assembly lines. That's my $200 worth of memory lane.

I hate to hijack this post, but has anyone tried the Eastwood engine paints that they just released? The photos show many factory colors, but I think they don't look correct...It could be just the lighting or the printed images. I just wonder if they are correct color matches. I was looking at the Pontiac light blue and it didn't look quite right in the catalog photo. Also, what does the Olds color they show match? Is it acceptable for my 442's 400?

I was surfing ROP yesterday and came across a post regarding paint...The guy had a few 400 blocks and he found 1980 Mazda code 9Y to be an almost perfect match for the color on his blocks...another one showed a Fiat color of "Rame metallic" but Ditzler number DAR2657H whatever that is...I am going to get a can of the mazda paint made up to see what it looks like...I was cleaning my valve covers and undercovered a small patch of the original paint to compare to..Its very close the that Ford color I have mentioned in the past and BRO mentions on his site..I will let everyone know how it goes...

hey Big Mike...how about some pics so we can see how it is supposed to look....would be nice... Well, I finally got around to cleaning up my storage area and got down to the spare 65 engine I have and unfortunately when trying to clean off some of the grime to take pics there was now paint left. The engine has surface rust on most of the engine, but some of the spots covered in grease and oil still had paint on them but came off when cleaning it up for pics. So won't be using my engine for proof. However, I'm telling you that when I first purchased this engine it had two spots on the engine that still had paint on and it was nowhere close to that copper color. I really wished the Olds division kept better records like some of the other GM divisions did so we can have info like this, really bites.
