my chassis is on the ground and with my 455/4sp sitting in there, the front upper control arms are still smashed against the bumpstops. is this normal? i cant even get the shocks in because they aren't long enough... i am a little concerned.

Are you using the correct Springs for the Big Block?

65 442 big block with air conditioning... i dont have air, but i want the front to sit up a little bit. air conditioning doesnt weigh that much, i mean it is slammed up, like smashing the bump stops.

Yes, normal. front end and coolant weigh more than you think. I had to pile weights on my frame to get the shocks in.

Don't tighten those A arm bushings until it's loaded on the ground. One of the last things to do as you complete the car. Only problem is you have to remember to do it!

Only problem is you have to remember to do it! too late... why is that? for the exact reason i said before, the weight on the front end and the fluids. Now that youve tightened everything the front suspension will never get to where its supposed to be when you add the front clip. Loosen it back up.

That's Ok, no harm, no foul, just loosen them up. The bushing to a point act as a torsion bar. When you tighten the bushing down it squeezes the center steel bushing that the rubber bushing encapsulates. The steel bushing does not rotate, the action in the a arms comes from the rubber twisting with the up and down motion of the car. So if you tighten your down in the full up position it will be like having helper springs in the front, may even rip the rubber from all the stress.
