I am seriously considering building a detached shop in the backyard. My little garage is my baby outbuilding, but is too small and ready to collapse. It was made in 1945, and the concrete is slowly turning to dust. And it is not deep enough for these cool GM A-bodies we love.
Any ideas on cost, availability, etc.? I have been leaning toward a steel building, and I don't care if it is hot or cold...I just want some space. I would like a 30' by 40' little shop. Any wild guesses on price, any better ideas?

A 30 by 40 shop is an excellent size. Consider what ceiling height to build. Lifts will need 12-14 feet. You can have two floors, for a portion of the shop, if you go 17 feet.
You may want to list the types of functions for the shop. From there layout a potential floor plan. My shop is 40 x60 with a bump out for a motor home. And a wood work area on the second floor. The three oldsmobiles he overtaken the space.
Botom line, no matter how much space you build, you will fill it up with projects. And allow for expansion in one direction.
And consider the space in the ceiling as long term storage for light stuff like extra sheet metal fenders and hoods.
Cost is a function of how much of the work you can do.
