I am in the middle of restoring my 65 442 and I am debating over using Eastwood's chassis black or powder coating the frame and suspension parts. Does anyone know how durable the chassis black is? I am trying to go back as original as possible but, I also want to make this restoration to last as long as possible. Does anyone know any pros and cons on one vs. the other? Thanks

I've done it both ways. If your going to paint, then you have to sandblast, prime, sand, re-prime, sand some more and then paint. I will look great and last. I've had one under my car for 15 years and it still looks like day 1. ON THE OTHER HAND.... If you powder coat....they do the sandblasting and the finished job looks great. I have had the powder coating done for about the same price that I've paid to have the frame sand blasted. Most powder coaters don't have 20' ovens, so I had to drive 80 miles, but it was worth it. Make sure that you find one who can handle the lenght. Note: Powder coating is NOT that indestructible finish that it was first advertised to be. It wears and reacts much like paint. The up side is that it flows into all the tight places and seals very well.

My experience is with the blast and paint method. I dont know if powercoat fills in the pits in the frame but I know you can when painting it. By filling all the pits with body filler you can make the frame as smooth as it was when new. Its time consuming but its worth it. Theres many types of paint to use on the frame. The Eastwood stuff is durable and looks right. But it takes forever to dry.

For me powedercoating is the way to go. If the frame isn't pitted it'll look like it was slipped out the back door of the Lansing plant after it left the paint shop. I had a western truck frame done and it came our bad a$$. If you're in the Detroit area I can recommend a blaster who can blast your frame and then take it to get get powedercoated. 15 Mile and Mound Rd in Sterling Heights is the bead blaster and the powdercoater is 5 miles south of that.
I restored a 1990 Chevy truck and had the frame and suspension powdercoated. From now on that's the only way I'll do it. When I get into doing my 65 frame I'll go the same route. I also had my wheel housings, core support, and bumper brackets done as well. This guy in particular is cheap because most of the stuff he does is wrought iron fencing which is almost (if not) the exact sheen as if you'd spray it. Low gloss/chassis black.

PS Bro is 100% on the durability. So you still have to be careful and use a buffing pad or shop towels to jack your car up.
If someone wants to fill me in on posting an image I can post an image of the results.

Nick the photo has to be hosted somewhere on the net, like photobucket. Then their link to post it here. I use a square oven glove on my jack. ;D

The crap on the top of the right frame rail is dust.

Thanks for the info. I just pulled the engine today hopefully I will get to the frame soon. I live just outside of Dallas/Ft. Worth so I will have to look around for a powder coater.

I got some quotes on powder coating the frame. One guy said $125 to powder coat and $250 to sand blast and powder coat. Is this suspiciously low or about right? www.qualitypowdercoating.com/dallas/

My truck frame was very low on account of two thing: I know the owner fairly well and 80% of his work is black fencing (the type with the bars on it). I would try and find references of the quality of work. In the end I paid around $300 to have the frame, core support, front suspension and wheel housings blasted and coated.

I'm in South Western PA and that's a good price around here. I agree though, get a few references and check out their work. If they don't cook it right, some blacks can look brownish.

A guy on eBay, gnhess, lives down there somewhere. He had two 65s at one time, sold one and still has the red 4 speed. I think his name is Greg Hess.

Just a note on powder coating a pitted frame: You can fill the pits with JB Weld and sand them to a smooth finish, much the same as using a body filler. Your frame will look like new.
