Hey I was checking out BRO's web page at the engine julian date on the block and was wondering what the number means. Do you count the number of days from the year the car was built or is it the # of days from the begining of the model year or what?? Anyone know how it works? Mine says 8.

Good question. Theres probably a simple answer to it but Ive always wondered how that system worked. If 8 is your code, is that from Jan 65 or Jan 64, or from the first day of model production? Seems to me it has to be from the first day of engine production, sometime in late summer 1964.
Sounds like your car is a very early prodution 65. When was it built?

My date code on the tag is 02D so it was 4th week of Feb. I was hoping the julian date would be Jan 8th of 65. Would it be kosher for the engine to be built that far in front of the body?

Well from the little research I've been doing on the web on different manufacturers engines julian codes it seems that when the julian codes start at the begining of the model year such as August for example then the code would correspond with that day of the year (255 for example) so the number would be high and keep going up until the end of the model year run (past 365)and there would be no single or two digit numbers. Other manufacturers engine julian codes are not model year specific and start at "one" each year for Jan 1st, which seems to be the way Olds did it since I've seen one and two digit julian numbers. I also read in the Olds faq that the engine could preceed the cars build date by 30-40 days, so mine could very well be the original engine. Anyway thats my 2 cents, please let me know if anyone know something different.

Not only could an engine precede the build date of the car by a couple of months or more, they frequently do depending on the year, model and if there were any significant changes made that particular year. One of my Cutlass’, don’t remember now it’s my Sports Coupe or convertible, but one of them has a 64 330 in it, and it’s original. People never believe me and they swear I’m nuts, but early cars for certain models were built using left over parts like engines and trans’. I was told by an old Olds factory worker at a show once that they did use 64 engines in the early 65’s because of the engine changes that were made to 65 models and not having enough on hand when they came down the assembly lines. I was told that this particular car was probably an ordered car very early in the run — most likely before the 65’s were even in the showrooms — and there wasn’t any of the reworked 330’s available and the car got a 64 330 with #1 heads with rocker shafts. I haven’t popped the hood on that car in years. Maybe when I start doing some work this spring I will untarp it and snap a few pictures to post.

The 400 in my car has a julian date of 156. Bro has a pic of a 400 on his engine page thats dated 121. So according to my theroy 156 should be late April or early May and 121 should be late March or early April (I'm just kind of rounding). Does that sound right according to your car's build dates?

I thought this question was answered, but just in case. There is a Julian date decoder on my main page and on the engine page. It's been there for a while.
