I did a search for "oil" but it won't take less than three letters. Sooooo what kind of oil are you using in your Olds? I checked out the CO site but like everyone here knows they get answers all over the board. I'm running a 425 and I think the PO just put anything he could get his hands on in her, now that shes my baby I need to take care of her. Thanks for the help. Gary

I'm a new user of Brad Penn Racing oil, runs nice in my F350, I'm sure my olds will enjoy it.

Back in the day when these things were new most of them called for a good 10w/40 or 10w/30, probably still applies. Personally I am kind of partial to either Castrol or Chevron-I always liked Quacker State but I don't even see it around any more.

A couple of years ago, my engine builder recommended Shell Rotella. It is a 15/40 with some good qualities. I use that in my "older" builds. Now, with the lower zinc contents there are some newer oils that I want to research. I am building (having built) a new legal stocker motor for my W31 and will probably try the Joe Gibbs break-in oil and maybe some type of synthetic oil for race use.

I've used Shell Rotella for many years, going back to the mid 80's when I managed a truck repair shop, Rotella 15w40 is excellent oil. I still use it today except I add ZDDP additive to bump up the zinc content, although the new formula still has a good amount of zinc.

I'm pushing this only because I had a noticeable difference in motor noise when I put this in my V10. Lots of good stuff like ZDDP. Some of the early Ford modular motors were known to be noisy when cold(short piston skirt created a slap when cold) among other things. I've used nothing but Amzoil or Mobil 1 until now. Very pleased with the outcome so far. Will be running Brad Penn 20-50 this summer in the olds. Here is an exert from there sight.
BRAD PENN® brand products are truly “MADE IN THE U.S.A.” American Refining Group’s Bradford, PA refinery is the home of “The Green Oil®” that racers, engine builders and enthusiasts alike have all come to know and love! The unique green color and outstanding performance of our Penn Grade 1 High Performance Oils set them apart from the competition.
BRAD PENN® Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils are formulated using a unique base oil cut from our tower, which gives our Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils exceptional film strength. This unique base oil causes our Penn Grade 1®High Performance Oil to cling tenaciously to engine parts to minimize wear during high engine torque loading and/or periods of heavily stressed operation such as those experienced during competition. This same oil ‘cling’ helps prevent ‘dry-start’ conditions to minimize wear even after the engine has been sitting idle for extended periods.
BRAD PENN® Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils also contain highly effective detergent and dispersant additives to guarantee exceptional engine cleanliness as well as oxidation and foam inhibitors that offer protection against thermal degradation and air entrainment.
In addition to our unique base oil cut, increased concentration of “zinc” (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate a.k.a. ZDDP) provides outstanding anti-wear/anti-scuffing protection for engines employing either ‘flat tappet’ or roller cams. BRAD PENN® Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils have been evaluated by a number of premiere camshaft manufacturers with tremendous success. Many are now recommending our Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils to provide outstanding protection for their ‘flat tappet’ or roller cams.

My V10 is getting up there, 10 years old+ with 145,000+ on it, and it needs to last me at least another full year at this point.

I only have 176,000 on mine and I intend it to be around a lot longer than a year, so if it likes this oil better than the other then that's what it gets. It's quieter cold and after it's at running temp it's like a sewing machine so, it works for me.

My engine builder (Bill at BTR) suggests Valvoline 5W30 full syn for the motor he built for my '70. In my old engines (350 &425) it was Valvoline 20W50. My 350 went 213,000. In my '88 GMC with 197,000 I've always used Valvoline 10W40 but switched to Maxlife awhile back. Never had a reason to switch. -pete
