I know it is difficult to think about A/C when most of the country is experiencing single digit temperatures. But, I am restoring A/C car systems and would like input about choices.
The current systems use R12, less available and costly. our cars use 4 pounds of R12. The alternative is R134A, which reduces our cooling capacity by 10-20 percent.
What is the experience with the R134A replacement? I have had all new hoses made (very close to original construction). And have the R134A cycling compressor switch replacement for the POA valve.
On my Cutlass coupe, I stayed with R12, but did add an electric fan to the condenser. Very improved temperature control in hot weather traffic.
I view the added condenser fan like the upgrade to disc brakes, NECESSSARY.

I have sold, and now use the R12/R134 replacements...they go by many names..Up here the one I use is Duracool...enviromentally safe (propane based) and works better than the old R12...Plus you can do it yourself...
