Can any of the old salts on the site tell me if it is worth it to upgrade to nitrile or rubber rear main seals on a 400, or would you stick with rope?

"Old Salts"? Yeah, I always use the FelPro rubber seal from a Ford 460. Just put one in the 455 I'm building yesterday.

Thanks. I've never done an Olds motor. My motor is good, but it looks like the tech who rebuilt it for previous owner did not know how to leak proof an Olds. I know about the issues with the intake and pan gaskets from prior reading. Why a Ford Seal? I saw Nitrile and rubber offered for the olds. Is it cost?

I think it depends where you saw it. Some vendors on eBay will refer to it as an olds seal. But it is the ford 460 seal if you look at the part number. There is some slight trimming to be done.

Because Olds never offered a rubber seal from the factory. Ford did. They are exactly the same size. The Olds specialty houses that sell "Oldsmobile" rubber seals are simply re-selling the FelPro Ford seal at a mark up, because now its an "Oldsmobile" part.
And since this will eventually come up, NO, you do not have to remove the angles grooves from the sealing surface on the crank. They are there specifically to direct the oil back into the engine instead of out through the seal. They are below the surface that the seal rides on.

Great advice. Do you have a recommendation for the Bronze engine paint? I tried the Rustoleum, but the spray out looked too dark to match my stuff.
