I have my stock 400 (with professionally rebuilt stock 4GC) up and and running for about 100 miles now. I have an small off idle hesitation (deadspot). Car starts right up when cold and hot, and runs strong otherwise (so timing seems good). Have the idle mixture screws adjusted for max vacuum and smoothness, but they are about 4 turns out, which seems like a lot. The engine idles pretty smooth, so I don't think there is a vacuum leak. I did go around with a propane bottle and didn't notice any other vacuum leaks. I did originally have one vacuum leak, which turned out to be the carb gasket, but A new gasket from a different company seems to have eliminated that (it was thicker).
What might cause the hesitation, and the idle mixture screws to need to be adjusted so far out (rich)? I know it could be numerous things, but maybe someone here had a similar issue with the 4GC.

I'm gettin' pretty old, but as I recall, hesitation usually means too lean. Somebody, a lot sharper than I am should chime in.

Yes it does looney, problem is the mixture screws are already 4 turns out, which should be pretty rich. And this setting is where the idle is best. Carb guy said he may need to re-tune the idle and off idle circuits.

The hesitation could be from running too rich also. How do your plugs look? 4 turns out on the mixture screws would mean you would need to go up a jet size.
