The part then needs to be stripped and copper plated, then each pit needs to be hand filled with solder. The solder is ground down to match the contour of the part. Then the part can be plated normally. The ribbed portion is especially labor intensive. Be sitting down when you get quotes from plating shops.

It all depends on how bad the original was and how good a job the chrome shop does. Before/after photos of the $300 job are necessary to judge the quality of that work. A photo of the OP's part is also necessary to understand how bad it is. "Light pitting" is a very subjective description. I've seen a lot of allegedly "rust free" cars that I'd call junk, for example.

agree with Joe, pitting is very subjective. If bad pitting, it may be less costly to look for a replacement piece that does not need rechrome. I've seen some top pieces listed on ebay of late, in the $300 range, but I'd have to look again to see the quality of the for sale item.

Shop did this in 4 days. I'm going to take my console plates there next week. This one is out of my old mans 67.

I had mine done on my 65 auto console and it turned out quite well but not like it came from the factory but I am happy with it and the cost was $400.00 You can spend $1500 or more for show chrome. I didn't know that much about chroming but the guy who did mine explained the issue with chroming pot metal, and the pitting. So much depends on how bad the pits are.
