I'm currently using a turbo 400. Previous owner added a separate cooler in series with the lines to the bottom of the radiator. Is this necessary? The cooler is in front of the radiator, and there will be no room for it when I eventually install the condenser for the AC system.

If your question is, can you eliminate the aux trans cooler, yeah, but...
Heat is the enemy of an automatic trans. I'd keep the aux cooler if at all possible.

X-2 I am running a smaller thermostatically controlled secondary cooler to the left side (looking at the front of the car) of the A/C condenser in front of the radiator. You should have plenty of room if you pay attention to the width of the secondary trans. cooler!
