So my new 400 is assembled. I tried installing the new dipstick from supercars unlimited. It has the two ridges that press into the block opening. The first ridge went in pretty easy with some light tapping. The second ridge, which is the same diameter but somewhat longer, would not go in. I tried placing a bolt in the end of the tube and tapping, nothing. I tried a screwdriver inserted in the end, nothing. I tried placing an open end wrench over the top stop and tapping the wrench, nothing. Grease, oil....etc did not help.
I read to place the dipstick in the freezer for a day or two. I measured the diameter of the ridge before and after the freezer, and there was no change, so I doubt that would do anything.
Any other tips for installing these things? I purchased another tube, but don't want to ruin another one.

Do NOT hit the tube from the top. That is guaranteed to bend and break it. The Chassis Service Manuals show a Burroughs Tool that is essentially a section of heavy tubing that slips over the dipstick tube with one side machined away. This allows the tool to press against the bead on the tube down at the block. Many folks use an appropriately-sized open end wrench to do the same thing.

mine only had one ridge, the stop, it was a chrome replacement. yes Joe, i also tapped it in on the end. it went rt in with light taps. your right though heavy hits woulda bent it

Bro,
Can you measure the diameter of the ridges? Maybe the re-pops are too wide. But mine looks just like yours.
The ridges on my part measure 10.2 mm (0.4016 inches).

Use a crows foot on the top flange. It should slip right in with a couple well placed taps to the extension.

I have had the same issue a few times with most dip stick tubes. I found the solution was to ever so gently grind a bit off of the knub (What a word). The tube was still a press fit but went right in as it should. None of them have ever leaked. Good Luck

Thanks Bro,
That's interesting. I measured the opening in the block and it is 9.6 mm, which is larger than your tube measurement. Of course the tools could be different. I know mine is accurate as it is from work and is calibrated.
Thanks again!
