Has anyone added A/C from one of the well known A/C shops or upgraded their factory AC? Looking to upgrade or scrap my original AC depending on what the word is out there on the way to go

Scotty,
I think you have to evaluate your goals.
Each of the factory A/C components can be replaced, and operated on R134a. A switch to a Sanyo compatible compressor probably offers the best update, as the A6 compressor was designed for R12 pressures. And all new hoses. The POA can be adjusted to work with R134a. Or you can go with a cycling switch.
The factory system provides the lowest noise operation, as the fan is outside the cockpit.
I have added twin electric fans for my R134a swap, to the condenser, using the A6 compressor. For my convertible, I may continue with R12, as the old hose technology was the big leaker. I have all new hose systems. Also new condenser.
The biggest problem with all the A/C systems was the air is not filtered, and loads the evaporator with dirt. Typical for almost every car, except newer high end.
My experience is the A/C control micro switches are a source of failure. I am looking into mounting standard micro switches on the dash operator control unit. Those cables do need to be lubricated, as moving from A/c OFF to Normal is very stiff..
