I have a stock 400 with a edelbrock carb, also 4 speed.Problem when engine is not running lincage on carb works smooth.Once I start it lincage gets tight workable but tighter. So when I drive & come to a stop my idle is fast about 1000 if i goose it, it drops down to 750-800 so what do you think maybe choke lincage just old carb don't know tried lots of things nothing helps so I'm asking the GODS for help

using the "WAG" system here, "wild _ _ _ guess", maybe it could be the throttle plates sticking when it heats up due to dirty bore or maybe they are loose...sorta sounds like the choke might also be out of adjustment...hopefully one of the carburetor gurus will reply and give you some good solid advice...

I would check ignition timing, and at the same time be sure your vacum advance connection to the distributor is routed correctly or, close it.
wrong ignition timing plus vacuum advance routed incorrectly can cause a increased idle.
and yes, choke linkage to be checked also.
Best wishes and good luck

i had a 66 cutlass that would idle up when i sat in the car,the carb linkage was too tight and needed adjusting. probably needed new body mounts too but adjusting the linkage cured it.idk

Thanks for all the input I've tried almost all you have said I still can't solve the problem of when its running lincage is tight when its off its perfect thats what I can't figure, maybe just a worn out carb
