I picked up and installed an original tilt steering column in my car. Turn signals, horn and tilt all work correctly. I put on my deluxe steering wheel and there was about a 7/16" gap between the hub of the wheel and the cover on the column. Looks bad and can see the white plastic on the canceling cam. My original non tilt column had about an 1/8" gap. I took out the heavy compression spring under the wheel which closed the gap to about 1/8" but the downside is the wheel wobbles. I haven't been able to find a shorter spring. Any thoughts on me cutting the current spring? Also, if the spring cutting goes bad does anyone have one or know where I can get one? Thanks

not an expert here but seems like before you go cutting the spring I would find out if the combination of a tilt steering wheel column and a steering wheel from a non tilt column are compatible...might be a difference in the hub on the steering wheel for a non tilt column vs tilt column...or the cover on the tilt column is a different length than the non tilt...obvious...just don't think cutting the spring is the answer...I have run into the same problem when installing custom steering wheels
hopefully someone with more experience will respond...

I wasnt able to get the steering wheel back on colum with that heavy spring. I ended up loosening coupler at steering box, then i got it back on correctly.

Good question on the wheel / column compatibility. Does anyone have a deluxe wheel on a tilt column or know if that was an original option?

I contacted the eBay seller I bought the column from to see if he had any ideas. He rebuilds a lot of columns and had a shorter spring that worked just fine. The gap between the wheel hub and column cover looked like that on the non tilt column. I tried a canceling cam for a Chevelle but that didn't work. I followed Bro's directions on making a turn signal canceling pin and that did the job. The column tilts, the turn signals work in all positions and the horn works.

The picture helps. The gap between your wheel hub and column cover looks like what I have after installing the shorter spring. Are your steering wheel and column original to the car. I'm still curious if the deluxe wheel was an original option with the tilt column. Thanks

Thanks As far as I can tell its original but the car is 50 years old and had 4 repaints so anything is possible I can't say but it has 64k reading on the odometer and all original ball joints that have no play it came from a small town north of me that it spent it's whole life
