Why don’t you see any black paint, or traces of black paint on 442 grilles? All the 442’s I’ve seen that have not been restored, even some that have, don’t have any black paint left on the grilles? Have any of you that have stripped a number of these cars seen an traces of black left on a grille?
The same goes for the red in the Rocket logos on the hood spear and trunk panel. Other than the red in the rocket’s exhaust trail, nothing else. Which also leads me to think the red in the exhaust is a different red than the garnet red on the logo portion.

The original grill I had, had some black left on it. Look at this pic in the members ride from the "Shouldve kept it" thread, no black. Pic was taken or developed in 1970. My original headlight bezels were black too, and lots of it. Lot more than the grill was. How about the trunk letters? Any paint? I think mine were silver but its hard to tell. Ever see an old pic of a 442 with dog dish caps? I havent.

Heres another one, the heater shut off valve, only used on 442s. According to the assembly manual all 65 442s got a heater box shut off valve that attached to the passenger side valve cover via a bracket.
Never seen one on a car.

I think heater valve was an AC thing only
I have 18 to 20 nicely pitted grills that have some black left on all of them. You should have looked closer GRASSHOPPER
The Assembly Manual is full of false information.......like the front emblem on the upper right of the grill. I actually saw one like this at the Olds 100th Aniv up there. I would bet anything the owner would swear that's the way it should be..........simply because he never saw one and figured the book would have to be right.

This is the valve. Roger Green was making the bronze bracket in the photo. And the hose is the one Fusick sells for a 65 442 no A/C. Roger said all the 65s had this valve, and in some of the old magazine articles you can see it. Must have been a leaker and guys removed it pretty quick.

For all cars to have that you would need vacuum pressure to control it, and neither of mine have those controls.

This picture is the reason I started the thread knowing that bthis car is just 5 years old or so and its gone. Wow BRO, I know you have stripped a lot of 442's, but ALL of your grills have some black left on them? I've seen a few and all but one had no traces of black. How about the trunk letters? Any paint? I think mine were silver but its hard to tell. No, not there either or the lettering on the grille as well, never seen any. Ever see an old pic of a 442 with dog dish caps? I havent. Can't say that I have ecpect maybe the pics you posted of those old drag racing pics, I haven't gone back and checked tho. I'm glad I asked.

Last year at the OCA show a guy had an NOS grill for sale. The letter grooves were black.

I just repainted my grill. It had some black here and there but most of it was gone. I suspect the surface of the grill was not an ideal substrate for paint to stick so the paint would peel off rather quickly. They just took the finished F85 grill and slapped some black paint on it for the 442 look.

My wife has a 86 442 and a few years ago I bought a new grille from GM to replace a broken one, returned 2 of them because the black paint was flaking off already in the package. The dealership said no more returns because they are all doing that. ;D
