Want to change my carb. to a holley 600 but not sure what size i need.My motor is a stock rebuilt 400. I also remember some one saying something about highth for stock air cleaner, intake is stock so what do you think is a 600 what i need. I'm just cruising not racing thanks

Personally if I was going to change the carb, I'd go to a 750 Holley. As for bolting up to stock intake and clearing with stock air cleaner I don't know.

Need to find carb spacer like this one. Then you need to buy air cleaner drop base to get the clearance you need.

what would happen if i didnt use the spacer and just used my stock air cleaner base? Also what do you think of size i was thinking 600 other member says 750

I'm running a Holley 600 cfm on my stock 400 seems fine , but somewhere down the line I'm going to switch to a 750. A Holley will not work directly bolted to the manifold you will need a spacer. Our manifolds are not a true square bore . There more of a spread bore. Unless you want to modify your original base you will need to buy a drop base.

Thanks for that I get it. Now why a 750 should i just go with a 750 not a 600 how come you want to change

If I'm remembering correctly a stock 4gc is 650 cfms . My 600 is seems just fine for cruising . Car doesn't seem to run to lean , car seems to have more power now over the 4gc . Reason for changing to a 750 later is I'm going with a bigger cam, head work and a torquer manifold all on a 455.

Thats why we have this forum I'm going to go with a 650 I think Holley makes one so thanks for the input I will let you know how it goes on my stock 400

Do a Google search on the Street Demon 625. I put one on my stock 400 manifold last year. The carb has both "spread bore" and "square bore" bolt patterns. No spacer needed. The carb comes in the 625 or 750.

The Street Demon sounds like a great compromise to use the stock manifold. I've run 650 Holley's for years on my Olds engines, on my 442 I run a double pumper and but runs great at a cruise and cranked down on WOT. However, with a Holley you need a spacer/adapter for a stock manifold requiring a drop base of a non stock air cleaner for clearance. On my Cutlass' I just used an aftermarket air cleaner, with my 442 I use a drop base and the stock air cleaner top and or an aftermarket Olds Racing air cleaner.

I have done this twice and used a 750 Holley each time. Engines have both run great. Have to use a spacer for the right bolt pattern but found one that is only one half inch thick. Used the original base pie tin but cut out the carb hole (wrong size for a Holley anyway)at the hump and got another base out of a junk yard that had the correct carb hole size. Then I cut out a "patch" from the new base and welded it into the original pie tin and dropped the base down around the carb in the process. Only "ugly" part is that I had to drill two holes in the pie tin for the carb float adjustments. Everything fit perfect and looks completely stock.
