How many of us drive or own newer cars and are tired of paying $123 for plates on a car with 183,000 miles? I know I am. I just had to renew plates for two vehicles, 1 2008 Grand Prix and 1 1990 Chevy truck. Grand Prix plate; $125, truck plate; $55 for a total of $180 to the SOS in Lansing. Here's what I do, renew the plate for the truck for $55, go back the next day and transfer it to the Grand Prix for $8. So far we're at $63. I then buy a new plate for the truck for $55 plus $5 for a new plate. Gives me a total of $123 for plates for both vehicles for the next year. Totaly legal and I've been doing it this way for three years now. Its a little more work but I saved over $60!!

You could NEVER get away with that in California. They let you transfer plates from one car to another? Man... that would be nice.

Not sly Jeff, just trying to beat the system (legally). I like your style though.

I bought my 77 Monte Carlo from the original owner last year and he turned me on to this little loop hole. He told me that is what he would miss most about the car!

Are MI fees based on vehicles year? In WI it's like $75 for cars and 1/2 ton trucks, and goes up from there for bigger trucks. When I started driving I think it was like $25-35 for cars in the mid late 80's

So if you can afford a Cadillac the state says you can afford $350.00 a year for plates.
