65 442 - Last fall I had my stock steering box rebuilt, from 4 turns lock to lock to three. At the same time, took the opportunity to rebuild/restore the steering column. Installed new lower bearing, and new upper bearing(part of signal switch). Also needed to rebuild rag joint with one of those kits.
Fast forward to spring, and while the three turns lock to lock makes a nice difference, other issues have now seemed to arise. First I now feel cracks/bumps in the road through the steering wheel. Second, I hear the power steering pump making the same noise you typically hear when bottoming out the wheel (turned all the way), but does it anytime the wheel is turned.
Any thoughts on these two issues?

The pump is probably week and is now showing it`s age because you lowered (numerically) your steering gear box gear ratio by a BUNCH. The "feel of the road" your experiencing is most likely coming thru your new rag joint. Could be a clearance issue, your steering tube adjustment might be too far down, rag joint not deep enough on the box shaft, not deep enough on the the column shaft, or a combination of them all. Just gotta play with them all and find a happy medium

This has been bothering me since I made the above post, I keep telling myself it`so 101 basic that it`s inclusion would be insulting !! At the risk of rustling some feathers: Please, check for any binding in all steering linkage, gear box, AND steering column sector. Since both the box, and steering column were rebuilt.

are you running headers?

Thanks Dave, I was thinking it was the rag joint myself causing the feeling in the steering wheel. I rebuilt it with one of the HELP rubber discs, which is a little thinner than the original. I have a new rag joint, but it seemed very tight, and I didn't want to force it on and ruin the splines on the box. I also was thinking it could be the different lower bearing as the new bearing is a sealed type, and the original GM bearing is unique looking design that perhaps helps to dampen vibration. I'm also bringing it to the shop around the corner to make sure the linkage wasn't damaged while removing the pitman arm. When driving there is no feeling of binding, just some noise and the vibration when hitting bumps or cracks in the road. Do you think the pressure on the pump needs to be increased for the three turn box? Everyone I asked said no, but I remember an article showing how to do it.

Increase pressure in that pump, I`d say no. A tight shaft in the steering column,or steering shaft rubbing on headers won`t cause your pump to work harder, will cause YOU to work harder and feel things thru the shaft. The positioning of the steering column can cause issues. I`d contact your re-builder and ask what the torque to turn specs are on that gear box. It could be too tight. Drop your drag link from the pitman arm and see if your pump quiets down any. You have to start eliminating things before you have a failure.Check that pitman arm for clearance to the box. YOU have to put eyeballs on things, get touchy feely. New parts can bring out the old in old parts

No headers Bro.
I just remembered when I reinstalled everything last fall, the steering wheel wold not return to center without some help. I readjusted the rag joint a bit and that helped a lot, but it still is a tad off as the new rag joint disc does not seem able to remain flat, the shaft always bends the disc. May have to see if I can get the new one on again as it has a much stiffer rubber disc than the rebuild kit disc.

This post is solely concerning your steering pump whine. Your high pump pressure should be your main concern
"I hear the power steering pump making the same noise you typically hear when bottoming out the wheel (turned all the way), but does it anytime the wheel is turned."
I might be totally off coarse here,But I get the feeling were on two different pages. NOTHING ABOVE the input shaft of the steering gear box will cause your pump to exert more pressure, (work harder)EVERYTHING BELOW the input shaft requires pump pressure to function.

It turns out the vibration was due to the steering box adjustment being too tight. It was loosened up a bit and now it is much better. As for the noise, changing out the power steering fluid for ATF transmission fluid helped a bit. But I am still having the "play" issue in this thread. w29.boards.net/thread/4809/steering-column-question
