Just out of curiousity, who else is running the wider 68-72 rear end?

1971 Chevelle 12 bolt, with 3.90 posi, under the convertible. I do have a 68 Olds 12 bolt, posi, in the queue with the large axles. Not sure where it goes. The Yellow car has the original 10 bolt posi, rebuilt.

Holy Crap! Do you mean...none of you own a true 65 442?
Chevelle rear end.......you ought to be ashamed.
If any of you other non-believers want a 70 Chevelle 12 bolt posi, I have one for sale.

Yeah, so shoot me! Mine came with the car when I bought it along with the original peg leg rear. I'm going to rebuild the posi rear that is under the sports coupe I'm stripping which came out of a '70 442 and I think it has 3.73 gears. Then that rear will go in my 442, so that will make it an Olds bastard 442. :-)

I have the convertible original 10 bolt posi, 3.23 gears. I would have put in in the convert, but I scrambled some 10 bolts in my mis-spent youth. Olds should have installed the 12 bolt chebby rear. We are just resolving an Olds oversight, so we can smoke some tires and not break the toy. The Tremic 5 speed has a 2.87 first gear, and with the 3.9 rear, is good for tire smoking, legal in all states, not like pot. The yellow car has the original Muncie narrow ratio, 2.20 first, so even with the 3.90 rear, not likely to tear up the posi (i did shim the posi unit tight, made up some shims for the cone posi to set the gears tight. The 10 bolt will work unless I get some wrinkle wall slicks. Then BOOM. Been there and done that. The Chebby 12 bolt handles the wrinkle walls no problem. My 64 Cutlass with mega 425 block turned 10.90 quarters, with a Chebby rear, back in the day.

Just out of curiosity weren't Canadian built olds got the chev rear end or did that only apply for newer built cars ?

Mine's a Cutlass, so I don't have to worry about all that "correct" stuff.

Same as Mongoose, don't need to worry on my Cutlass . 3:73's on a 71, 5/8" wider so needs a 5" BS to clear 255/60/15's.

Gotta 70 olds 10.5 rear in mine had to have the retained axles. To what I understand the center section is really a Chevy.

I have a 66 442 unit in my 65 Cutlass, now sporting a 3.55 gear with a 4 spider posi from a Firebird. I no longer worry about breaking spider gears with harsh shifts. BTDT.

FYI, the wider Type O was factory-installed in the 1967 cars. The factory parts book shows exactly the same housing part number for a Type O for 1967 and 1968.
