I'm thinking of replacing the turn signal switch. What are the steps to do this? Can it be done with the steering column in the car? Any advice/pictures would be appreciated. I know I need to find out which one I have before ordering the new one.
As I understood from a previous post, the turn signal switch has a bearing for the steering shaft. If the bearing is bad there will be play in the steering wheel (which I have).

If someone wants to do a step by step with pics. I'd be happy to post it for future reference.

You will probably have to also loosen (or remove) the nuts and strap that hold the column at the bottom leading edge of the dash so you can remove the plate on the underneath side of the column that encases the switch harness.

Thanks Mongoose!
So that's the bearing the prevents the steering shaft from moving up/down/side to side (maybe 1/16" play)? Is there another bearing it could be, or this is it?

There is another one at the bottom end I believe. There was an old thread a few years ago where someone replaced the lower bearing with a repop from a chev column place. Maybe that member will see this and chime in.

Thanks for all the replies.
I removed the switch, it is the BPC switch. There is play in the shaft bearing, although all ball bearings are there. I presume there should zero movement in the bearing, correct? I don't want to order a new one if they all have some movement.

Once I put the new bearing in there is no noticeable movement. As Scotty mentioned, there is only one other bearing, and that is located at the other end of the column tube. I purchased it from CJ's, and it seems to work just great.

Unless the top one is somehow damaged I would expect the bottom bearing to be the one to fail first as it is exposed to the elements somewhat. If I recall the BPC is the heavy duty version of the switch.
