I looked for a 400 'B' block for two years before coming up with the correct date code, I think I found 6 to 8 blocks and only one that had the correct date code. It didn't have the 3 center main caps and is having to be line bored and honed. The block cost me $300. and almost as much to ship to J&M Performance, with the Milidon caps, APR studs/nuts and machine work I'll have better than a grand in it and it still 1,000 miles away and just a block. The cracks you've got look to me to be freeze cracks they're all from the water jackets out, not into the cylinders. For my money if this is the original block I would spend the money to have a real pro, at fixing blocks, do a proper welded or maybe brazed repair. By the way, your 400 has a 4" stroke, same as the 425. A 425 and a 455 have the same bore at 4.125" the difference between the 455 and the 400/425 is that it has a 4.25' stroke, so you can buy a 455 block and use your reciprocating assembly and new pistons and have a 425+ c.I. engine depending on final bore BUT IT WON'T MATCH THE CAR!!

I promised myself I wouldn`t do this anymore

I have got a 425 block from dave which will be on its way shortly. I still do have plans for the 400 block just pennies and dimes away right now. Dave really took care of me with this 425 block he is sending me, he seems to really know his shit unlike me.

What ya got there are cylinder walls that are near transparent !! If that engine doesn`t overheat, have warped cylinder walls, then it`s never been run since being bored. If anyone wastes the time looking at it, check the water jackets see if there filled, talk to the builder see if he used torque plates. Non of this matters, it`s a grenade, plain and simple.
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION (IMHO)

Smitty at J&M performance has my block and has sonic tested it he told me it's one of the thickest blocks he's seen in 30+ years, He said it could conceivable go out to 4.185 we're taking it out to 4.130 and stroking the original forged crank to 4.125 for a 442 c.i. engine. At 4.130 he says "With the 4.130 bore we're golden with a perfect ring set and we are out where the heads won't be shrouded by the cylinder walls so it will breath to its potential, hindered only by limitations elsewhere. It also leaves the cylinder walls in excellent condition with very thick cross section everywhere. The thicker the walls the less heat transfer into the water jacket." so Don't worry about you 400 out to 4.125 my bet is that it fine.

Sorry fellows I'm amblyopic and suffer form dyslexia, (eye problems) and reverse letters all the time it's a real pain in the a... My block blue printing and all other machine work is being done by M & J Performance owned by "Smitty" Mark Smith. Those who know Oldsmobile, know of him, I don't believe an introduction is necessary. IMO one of the best.

Well that proves what everybody has been saying for a while about me, I don't know anything, cause I never heard of him. I'm sure he'll do a fine job as many others also will.
