Some previous personage put headers on this 455. I get a whole lot of heat under the hood, and was wondering if there were any hood scoop options available for the 65 to let fresh air in / hot air out, or if that's just a pipe dream.
I have to let it sit a short while as it seems the starter gets a little hot and barely wants to turn until it cools a tad. Then it's just fine. Seems okay if you start it right after you stop, as well. it's that two to ten minute period that's a bit of a pickle.
There's a small heat shield on the starter.
My options as I see them are a) Bigger shield. b) Stock exhaust manifolds. c) Holes (scoops) in the hood. d) Smaller high energy starter. e) Wrap present starter with insulated metal tape or such.
What have I missed here, any thoughts?

Not sure on the scoop but I think it's a custom job any way you slice it and I think you covered most of your options on how to fix it

Hurstoldz on this forum has a hood with a couple dozen louvers cut into it. As far as hood ventilation goes, I think it's one of the better looks. If you want to retain more of a stock exterior look, probably your best solution is to either install factory style cast iron manifolds, or if you want to retain the headers, then replace the stock style starter with an aftermarket mini-starter. Since I installed a mini starter, I have had ZERO heat soak starting issues.

I've run headers on the 65 442 for 49 years with no problems. You need a new starter. I had that problem with the "Red Headed Step Child'" and it has stock manifolds, A new starter made it all good again..

I had another GM brand with headers and had the hot start problem. I just used a piece of that header wrap stuff (comes in small sheets) and the problem went away. Lot less $$$$ than the mini starter.

Also, it probably doesn't help matters but the engine is not the usual 400 with 10.25 to 1 compression ratio (is that correct?), it's a rebuilt 455 with 200 lbs compression. I was told it was 11.5 to 1, but have no way of verifying that. It does for sure have 200 lbs, though, and could be hard on starters.

Just kind of cobbled it around the starter and held in place with some wire. Not a high tech job by any means but it worked. You do have to be careful of the battery connections though, when using the wire to hold it in place.

I'm have the same problem with stock manifolds and starter , it's on my list of needs for the car.

Normally I wouldn't be so concerned, but I haven't had an engine with quite this much compression before. The starter had a loose drive when I bought the car, and it cost me $60 to get it replaced. My starter guy is about 45 minutes drive each way in the heat......don't you just love all the whining !!

Diddo I'm sure I could knock the timing back a few degrees and it would stop, but I only have so much room in my distributor adjusment and it (HEI) will hit the throttle linkage. Also, the starting issue only seemed to happen on the hottest day sitting in line idling for AirCare testing. Once I convince myself that the hot starter isn't an issue, I can retard the timing a bit. Went for a short drive last night, and it was fine at the gas station, and started fine again at the old car meet. Not a huge problem, just one of the hundreds of minor issues that irk a man into annoyance.
