Help clear me of a brain fart...
Obviously the neoprene rear main seal can be installed facing either direction, but only one way is the correct way. The descriptions I'm finding online are clear as mud, and no one is posting an illustration. Where the seal actually makes contact with the crank journal is offset from the midline of the seal. Should the contact point be offset toward the front of the engine or toward the flywheel?
I'll try to post a picture of a seal half in a minute.

Here's a picture of a seal half. Having trouble getting a clear picture up close with my cell phone. As you can hopefully see in the picture, the seal "slopes" toward the left side of the picture with the point where the seal makes contact with the crank journal is to the left of the centerline of the seal. So in this picture, would the flywheel side of the crank be on the right of the left of the seal?

Oriented as in your photo, the front of the engine would be to the left, the flywheel to the right.

"I suggest mongoose offset the seal. And "light" amount of rtv, means "light" Also don`t disturb the knurl on the crank. Check crush on seal by dry fitting, most times the backing of the seal needs to be removed to the wire. Ford O.D. and Olds O.D.`s different, Olds is a few Thous. smaller.www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnfnZ5gJ5GE
