i just took my tail pipe of my manifold and theres no gasket in there should there be or is it just metal to metal

Should be metal to metal flange fitting.

I know the factory didn't use a gasket between the head and exhaust manifold, but "in all my years", I've always put a gasket in if I disassembled the assembly....just to be sure in case things have warped a bit.

put back together without gasket works great bought them from thortons very happy also sent 2 shirts big plus only problem was that the i don't know what its called the flapper made a lot of noise so i took the spring off now all is good so tell me is that going to be alright or what i really don't care now it's quiet tomorrow installing new electronic ignition can't wait let you know how that go's tomorrow it's nothing fansey mallory hei

I gotta apologize....didn't read your post good enough, I guess. ripolds is right; I put my car together without any gasket between the header pipe and the manifold. No problem. Sorry about my other post.

I removed the spring flapper as well, no big deal.

You'll regret removing the spring if it starts rattling - hope you wired it open! The heat riser is what puts heat through the manifold to de-actuate the choke. Now, it'll stay on longer, wasting fuel. Replacing it would be more economical, in the long run.

I welded the flap open since my heat riser in the intake is plugged anyway, and I use an electric choke.
