There are 3 studs on the back side of the dash face plate. the easiest way for me is to remove the whole face plate with everything still in it. If I was you I would just try removing the spedo head and not the whole face plate unless there are other things you need to remove to get detailed or re chromed.

The rest of the speedometer is fine. So you think I can remove just the speedo head by removing the two screws on either side of where the cable attaches?

No remove the three speed nuts that hold the speedometer to the dash face .

And are the studs/speed nuts located in the places I highlighted in your picture? It's kind of hard to tell in the photo...

Ok thanks! Once I know the car is going to stay covered up for the winter, I'll have to pull the unit out and see what the next steps are.
Hope I just find the odometer gearing gummed up, or a dried mouse turd jammed in it or something. Anyone ever taken one of these apart? RamZ, I'll bet you have. I seem to remember you detailing one...

I have, not a big deal. If you mess it up, not likely, I have a couple of them if you need one.

Correct . Thanks for high lighting it for me . Hey Shane, I'm finally putting some attention to working on the speedo. I got the 3 speed nuts off without much problem... but I haven't figured out the jigsaw puzzle on how to get the assembly out from behind the dash. It doesn't appear that I can orient it to pass it through the dash opening, and the braces from the firewall to the steering column block my ability to rotate the speedo out from underneath. I unbolted the driver's side brace from the column and firewall, but it looks like it'll take a little persuasion to separate the brace from the column mount and dash bracing. So before I start a more aggressive approach, I thought I'd tap your experience for removing just the speedo (I really hate breaking things). Additional note: I removed the dash/column support rod on the drivers side, and that doesn't provide sufficient clearance to rotate the speedo to pull it out from underneath the dash.

LOONEY Wrote: DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM just dashes. THEY'RE ASSHOLES!!!!!! Just dashes did a GTO dash for a friend of mine. He sent a core, was told a price and time frame, was told 90 days tops. It was almost 6 months and when it was returned, it was wrong. Had to eat the shipping back, wouldn't return calls and they had to have a lawyer send a letter threatening to sue before it was takin' care of. Nobody needs that. There's more to the story but, that's the just of it. There are other people that do dashes but I've never done any up to this point. Add them to the "SHIT LIST" and explain your issue. w29.boards.net/index.cgi?board=feedback&action=display&thread=1769

It's pretty well explained right there. They screwed up and wouldn't admit it and weren't going to do anything about it until legal action was mentioned.

Why not just buy a new "used" speedometer for $50 from me? I'll even test it for you. I asked that speedometer place in Howell, Michigan how much to restore my '69 gages, all three pods, and they said up to $2000. I told them to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Why not just buy a new "used" speedometer for $50 from me? That is definitely a possibility... in this post both Shane and Ramz they may have spares if needed. But first I have to get the speedo out of the car. It appeared that removing only the speed cluster would be the cleanest way to get to it, but now after working on that I'm not sure it can come out by itself, and I risk scratching up the chrome bezel or the plastic lens. I noticed I already bent 3 of the prongs that the cluster harness plugs in to, but I bent them back and things appear ok. Unless someone has some other suggestions, I think I'm going to change my focus to removing the entire pad/panel assembly. I'll go back through postings on this site to help me identify the locations of the studs/speed nuts securing the dash. I seem to remember there are 11 of them. It's always easier for me (at least mentally) if I know ahead of time where each one is located. Then once I have the speedo on a bench, and look it over a bit, then I may find I need to source a replacement.

Removing the pad and panel is the easiest way to go.

Ok... removed the dash assembly from the car. Took me 1-1/2 hours to get it out, about as much time as I had invested trying to figure out if I could get the speedo out from underneath the dash. Live and learn... hopefully this post will help others out in the future. While I have the dash out, I'm going to freshen up the panel. I restored it in 1990, but some of the silver has begun to wear a bit around the ignition switch. But I've set that aside for now, and focused on the reason for me pulling the dash out... the stuck odometer. Rear view of gauge cluster (inverted) To get to the odometer I had to get things apart, starting with these 4 screws: Next I removed this "blackout plate", which covers most of the internals of the rest of the cluster. Once you've disassembled the speedo to this point, the plate is only retained by a couple crimps at the bottom by where the speedo cable attaches. Then you can remove the speedo unit itself, by removing the two screws that attach the speedo to the gauge cluster housing. The are located on the back, next to where the speedo cable attaches. You can see where the needle has faded, and could use a repaint as explained by Ramz on Bro's site. Two small screws hold the black "5mph" marking plate to the speedo unit. And there's the core of the speedometer. You can see some of the gearing that turns the odometer digits... The numbers were locked up... and I used a small flat blade screwdriver to free up the gearing, and everything loosened up. I put a square-bit in my drill, and spun the speedo input, and put 1.4 miles on the odometer, and the needle was smooth. It's all pretty clean inside, so I've held off putting any grease or spray lube on anything. Seems like that would encourage the accumulation of dirt/debris, and it hasn't had any for the prior 48 years. So other than cleaning the whole assembly up good, and repaint the needles on the speedo and the fuel gauge, the only thing that I need to find a replacement for is the right turn signal indicator light housing, which the plastic has started to weather away. So I removed these two screws on the back of the cluster, and the signal light houses comes right off. So if anyone can get their hands on a good replacement, that would be fantastic.

It seems like last time I repainted the dash, Eastwood had an Argent Silver. The only thing I find on Eastwood's site for that color is what they call a wheel paint, and I'm guessing that's not the correct finish.
Anyone have a lead on this?

I'm pretty sure that Eastwood calls their argent replacement, Detail Silver. I think Jasen mentioned it in his restoration of his dash for the Club Coupe.
