Hi guys,
I hope all is well!, I am just trying to get a budget figure to finish my Project. I am going to drive it as soon as a few things are buttoned up but I need to get a rough budget figure together. Regarding the Tail Panel, tail lights, 442 side scoops, and the trim from front to back of the car mid way up (isnt that considered belt line trim) does anyone have any clue what it costs to chrome that? I know some shops are going to be higher than others but I dont even have a clue where to estimate?
Thanks
Mark

All side trim, scoops, grill, 3 tail panels, tail lights, and extra tail light center bars. Was my plan to sell the rechromed tail panels to rekoop some money until I got the quote back at 2100$. Remove two tail panels from the equation and the quote came to 1600$ and 6-weeks later I would have new looking trim. I have not had it done yet, let us all know who you use and price.

$1,200? , $1,600? Wholly crapola!
My understanding from quotes I received and others who have had chrome work done is that the 10 side chrome pieces cost around $3,000, and the tail panel costs upward of $1,200 (and not even done properly). Tail light bars $300. So that's a total of $4,500, which was way too rich for my blood.
If someone had all this done for $1,200, please provide the chrome shop and indicate the quality.

6 years ago I paid 1,400 for all the side pieces, the scoops, and the hood lip trim.

I would say that $4,500.00 is a hell of a lot more realistic. Like you said, you can't get a tail panel done for $1600 and if you do, it still isn't done right. It will be all chrome and look like shit. If you have pits in the pot metal, there aren't many shops that will even agree to do it. It's like filling a tooth. Every pit has to be drilled out, filled with silver solder, ground back down and then repeated for the next 1000 pits. It's very tedious and time consuming and adds up to big bucks. If you're lucky enough to find pit free pot metal , then it gets a lot more realistic. I'de lay $5,000.00 aside and if you get any back, BE HAPPY.

Thus a big reason why these cars dont get restored. The cost of the chrome is more than what some guys paid for the car.

How about bumpers? I am talking about bumpers that are extremely solid (no rust front or back) but do need some minor straightening. What can I expect to pay for "driver" quality bumpers?

What can I expect to pay for "driver" quality bumpers? $600.00 per bumper. Tail light buckets $250 , tail panel center bars and rocket emblem for a standard f 85 or club coupe $200.00 , speedometer bezel $75.00 This is what its costing me for the few things I have at chrome shop.

You can get what many call driver quality bumpers for $500 each, however, some folks idea of "driver" quality bumpers are $700+. My opinion only, bumpers are so easy to nick, ding, scratch or otherwise damage in a way that it is no longer perfect. I personally like the $500 bumpers so I can drive my car and not worry about the bumpers. If my car had what many feel is the now standard of "show quality" bumpers - and mind you that level is not the "concourse" level - I would never want to drive my car. Spending $1200 to $1500 per bumper is too much, IMO, I'd rather spend the difference on other items for my car and go with decent looking $500 ones.

I can live with ~$500 per bumper. The shame of it is that the chrome on my bumpers is actually very good...I just can't live with the dents.
Shane...what shop are you using for your chrome work?

Shane...what shop are you using for your chrome work? www.showquality.com/ He is a small one man operation and slow. He worked for custom chrome for many years and studied under Jon Wright he is about half the price custom chrome. So if your in a hurry to get things done he is not your man. If your like me and have more time then money he will work out just fine. He has also done a couple of the tail panels for our 65s with the correct texture, well it looked correct in the photos he showed me. I haven't seen a tail panel hes done in person yet. Nor did I ask what he charges to do one.

Ramz's right, every piece on one of these cars is cast except the bumpers and the window trim and maybe a couple of small pieces inside. That's where the cost comes in, it's the repair and copper and buffing and more copper and more buffing then nickel, then chrome. For those who don't understand, it's the same (sorta) as fixing a body panel. You make the repair, then, bondo, same as the copper would be, then, sand and rebondo if needed, then sand and prime, same as the nickle would be. You can skip the nickle or primer but the end result isn't as good.
