Absolutely the shroud will help, also a good non AC 4 blade fan off a 65 425. Seems like the big car 425 without AC or a shroud had a deep pitch 4 blade fan, works better than a clutch fan any day and they are the correct size, but double check the size just in case.

They came with two different types of shrouds, a metal one, which is sort of half ass, you can find them for sale on Ebay once in a while, and a plastic one that is available all the time on Ebay, plastic one is more expensive, easier to get, and works better.

Does anybody know the part number or the ID number of the 65 425 4 blade fan? Or maybe a way to ID it in a car sitting in a junkyard?

So with the good shroud you should see a noticeable difference if in fact your problem had to do with air movement.

I used to have the same problem with no shroud and a mechanical fan. I went to a dual electric fan with a thermostat set to come on at 180 and turn off at 160 with an overide switch under the dash to make it run anytime I flip the switch. While street driving I leave it in the thermostat mode and it never gets over 180. While at the track I leave it in overide mode and cool it down to 150-160 before each pass then flip the switch to auto when I stage. One of the best upgrades I've made.

Fan blade should be about half way in and half way out of the shroud. Least that's the way they used to do it.

Running a 180* thermostat as well?
