I have HEI in mine, I guess better depends what you're doing. For a resto,no, but for ease of maint. hard to beat an HEI.

I have pertronix on the hardtop....took a little to work the bugs out of it. ended up have to run a designated power line to the power distribution block. If I had to do it again, I would get the pertronix set-up, but I like the stock look under the hood.

MSD "ready to run" HEI dont need an ignition box and is a true plug and play unit. No extra wiring etc. Very happy and easy to install.

I just did the Pertronix Ignitor II electronic swap including the Pertronix Flame Thrower II coil, Taylor wires and MSD heavy duty cap & rotor in my '65 Cutlass.
There are 2 wires on the positive side of the stock coil. One is a bypass circuit that sends all available battery voltage to the coil during cranking and one is the resistance wire which limits current at low speeds but allows maximum coil efficiency at higher speeds. The value of the resistance wire is 1.35 ohms.
The Pertronix Ignitor II requires a minimum 12 volts DC for proper operation. If the voltage supply is less than 12 volts DC (which it was the case in my car while using the resistance wire to power the Ignitor II), the Ignitor II is designed to sense high current levels and will shut off before any damage occurs.
I ran a new 12 gauge wire from the positive side of the coil to the back of the fuse block and spliced into the ignition circuit before the resistance wire and cranking circuit. I did not reconnect the factory wiring back onto the coil. In doing so, I completely bypassed the factory normal ignition circuit (resistance wire) and the cranking ignition circuit.
The Ignitor II is now fed with a healthy voltage all the time and remains happy. Other than the wire I had to run, the installation/swap is fairly simple. No more condenser or points which also eliminates the need to set your dwell / points. I did have to set my timing and also reset the carburetor idle mixture.
Good luck and feel free to ask if you need help.

I have also been toying with the notion of switching over to Elec. ignition, its just a lot easier to work with. Me I'm looking at a MSD complete kit. I hear they have id10T proof directions.

I ran the petronix on my previous 330, I can say It seemed to run better with the petronix kit than the points. I am also running Petronix on the new engine and it has operated flawlessly

In my shop we use the Crane XR-i set up. Its two wires to the coil, very easy to install It uses the stock rotor and screws that hold it in so you don't have to tread screws through it. Bolts down were the point use to be. It has a rev limiter built in and you don't need to run a new 12 volt line to run it. You just have to install a resistor inline. POINTS REPLACEMENT Upgrading the ignition of '50s, '60s and '70s vehicles while maintaining a “stock” appearance is easily accomplished by installing a Crane XR-i module inside the factory distributor, doing away with the points and condenser. This contemporary digital technology assures maintenance-free operation and has a built-in adjustable rev limiter for an extra safeguard. Crane also has digital conversions for many other factory ignition systems, both domestic and import. www.cranecams.com/view.php?s_id=15

i went to web site can't find the one for 65 olds 400 or a price which one did you get and how much was it thanks jim Got my complete setup from Summit Racing. It was about $114 for the Pertronix II and about $35 for the Flame Thrower II coil. Go to www.summitracing.com and plug in your application.

Use the one for the 67 Olds or all Pontiac's. Just watch the lent of the screws into the plate, you may need to cut them
