i have a set of american mags they measure 8 1/2 x 15 on the inside i put one on the car today rear with no tire but it seamed to wide i think it has a 3 1/2 back space i like a lower look with wide tires to fill the wheel wells it seamed the outside of the rim was flush with inside lip of the fender so i'm thinking a tire might rub maybe a 50 or 60 series i haven't even thought of the front yet even though i have 4 rims in need some input i think i'm thinking this to much thanks jim

With a factory rear end you'll need a 4 1/2" back spacing, and with a chevy rear end you'll need a 5 1/2" back spacing.

With a factory rear end you'll need a 4 1/2" back spacing, and with a chevy rear end you'll need a 5 1/2" back spacing. Not necessarily true. The early A body rears were the same width regardless if they were in a Chevy or Olds. The later A bodies were about 1" wider over all also regardless of make. I have an early width rear in my car (Chevy 12 bolt). I run a 15x8 wheel with 4-1/2" backspace with 275/60 tires. They slightly favor the outside of the wheel wells but have never rubbed. I think a 5" backspace would actually work better.

Excellent clarification. I was comparing my original '65 10-bolt to my current 69 Chevy 12-bolt.

I have a 5 1/2 inch back space on my rear wheels, with the original rear end. I am able to fit a 28 x 10.5 x 15 tire in the rear wheel well housing.... the tires will rub slightly when turning, but otherwise, no problems.
