I would like to install a tach in my '65 Cutlass. I would like to try and get something that is either period correct or something available today that would be close to period correct. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sun Super Tachs were on the market in 65, you can find them on ebay

Is it worth getting a vintage tach or should I buy a new one instead?

I hav several 65 olds floor console mount tachs. if interested send me a pm. I was going to say, there are plenty of original 65 Olds tachs around for sale. You could easily buy one and add it to your Cutlass. These were designed for mounting on a console, but a mount could be made/adapted to use it on the steering column, or even under the dash. If you have bucket seats already I would just get an original 65 console and tach and go that route.

Sun sells new tachs as well.
His car is a column shift auto, why would he go out and buy a console, a factory tach, a floor shifter, a steering column, cut a hole in the floor, and do all that work just to put a tach in?
I have an ancient Sun tach in my coupe, works great. If you can find a nice used one for cheap Id go with it.

Like they said above, e-bay has period correct Sun Tachs used and re-pops new. The new run around $125.00 and look real good - no sun co. markings on them. The used ones in working condition run anywhere from $50. to $100. Be sure you get one that does not need a transmitter. The batteries for the tranmitter are hard to find and in addition you have to find a place to mount it. The tach can be mounted on your steering column. I wouldn't be looking at the 10 grand ones but more in the 6 to 8 range. If you get the 10 grand you'll never see your RPM that high and most of the time you'll have a hard time even seeing what your RPM is because you'll always be at the bottom of the RPM range. Gary

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will keep an eye out for a vintage Sun Super Tach (that doesn't require a transmitter...thanks 65442). If that doesn't work out, I will get a new one from Summit.
I don't plan to or want to change the column shifter in the car so putting a console in just to add a tach isn't going to happen...but thanks for that suggestion too.
I'll keep you guys posted.

I think having column shifter with a console, that will have a hole in it, with nothing in it, will look like shit. Add to it the car is low mileage and very original, why would anyone do that?
Sorry for voicing my opinion Mike.

my 65 442 is a column shift non console car. i took a console tach apart and rotated the back half 180 degrees found an existing hole on the under lip of the dash and mounted it 25 years ago. works great. But hey it is your car do what works for you, it is just a tach you can change your mind later.
